over filled tranny fluid!!
 

I think my mechanic over filled my manual transmission fluid.

ok I went to a rotary shop thinking that they would know what they're doing, so I gave them 3 bottles
(3 quarts) of redline mtl, he puts in 2.5 quarts, and insisted he needed another 2 quarts, because, he said there were two chambers on the tranny to fill up, 2.5 quarts each chamber netting a total of 5 quarts......
I questioned him a bit, cuz I remembered it being somthing like only 2.5 total, but he insisted it being 5 quarts total 2 each side, so me, being trustful as usual, I run out and buy 2 more, and he fills it up...

well the shifting got smoother than whatever that was in there before...

but now that I've read a bunch of sites and manuals, they all state max cap is 2.5, so I think he may have over filled my tranny...

if so is there a possible way to drain half my fluid with out wasting it all??

or .. is there any bad effects if I left it over filled

for a thrid gen if that matters

From the sound of it, u'd think he'd only worked on automatic trannys. Yes u can drain some out. There's 2 square head plugs on the drivers side of the tranny, put a pan under there to catch the oil and remove the top plug, let it drain till it stops then replace the plug. When filling with oil, the top plug is removed and filled till it runs out that top hole.

replace every time the previous poster said "top" with BOTTOM! Remove the BOTTOM square plug and let it drain. To fill, keep pouring in tranny fluid into the BOTTOM plug till it pours out. The top one is how you got too much fluid to begin with.

Filling it til it starts to run out the top hole is how I've always done it on all vehicles I've had with manual trannys. Everybody has there own ways of doing things, here, the end result is the same. If they put it in by the bottle, they may have put it in by removing the shifter, by removing the top plug would allow only the overfill amount to drain out.

The end result is not the same. The top screw is a few inches above the bottom one. Filling from there will allow you to get at least 2 more quarts into the tranny. That's the only way you can overfill it (aside from jacking the car up real good and filling the tranny while it's on its side). The *bottom* plug is where the level is supposed to be. You're obviously overfilling your tranny a whole lot if you're filling till the top one overflows. So, however it got in there, remove the BOTTOM filler plug to let the excess out. once it is done, the level will be at the bottom filler plug....where it's supposed to be.

let me get this straight

1) jack up car on all fours to acheive a level lift

2) remove bottom square plug until it stops pouring out..

.. so after it stops pouring out of the bottom square plug, I should have around the right capacity??

yeah I'm pretty sure thats how he got the extra fluid in there, I recall him explaining to me that there were two drain plugs to be filled, but at the time I had no idea what he was talking about , due to lack of research :(

Correct.

don't bother with a socket, just use a crescent wrench.

Unless there is another fill hole I'm unaware of ABOVE the standard fill hole (with a square end) what the hell are you talking about?? Theres the drain plug, (very bottom like 1 1/8"?) and then theres a FILL hole on the side of the tranny with a square end (17mm?). You remove this plug and allow the excess (if there is any) drain out till level with the hole. Re-intall plug. This should take roughly 2.6 quarts. I dont understand how you can overfill it, its idiot proof. Maybe he did the rear end also??

There IS another fill plug you're not aware of. It's a few inches above the "idiot-proof" one you know of. It is recessed and also square, I think the same size. filling from there is the only way you can overfill unless (as i said) the car isn't level.

I'm unaware of that plug, the two I was talking about is the drain plug(bottom) and the fill plug(about 4-5 inches above the drain plug).
