Stalker, there are two types of sumps when talking about car motors. Most all street cars have a wet sump. Which is more commonly called a oil pan or crankcase. The oil from the motor drains into the oil pan & an oil pump which is driven by the motor pumps the oil throughout the motor to the different bearings. The second type sump is a dry sump. A dry sump has an complex oil pan that the oil is constantly pumped out of & into a oil tank. The dry sump system has no oil in the oil pan.
