oil pump
 

Replaced a factory oil pump with the Mazdatrix factory oil pump replacement. Put in an oil pressure regulator also (100 psi). The new pump was quiet for the 1st 5 min, then has an rpm-dependant mechanical whine. Anyone else run into this problem, or notice this on these pumps before? It seems to be working correctly though.

isn't the 100 psi regulator, the race-only regulator?

actually, yeah ... i just checked the site, and it is. is this a race car or street car? running that high pressure is bad for a street engine.

It's a "street car", kind of. Street legal and tagged, but all race engine. We did everything to it, 3 window race bearings, big street port, hand clearanced seals, etc.
This is not being used as a daily driver.
Just need to know if the Mazdatrix oil pumps are supposed to be noisy, or if I need to tear the motor apart - again (6th time).

well, i can't speak from experience because i've never had the need to use a race pump, but considering the level of pressure that the stock pump is being asked to maintain ... i can think of reasons why it would make noise.

how did you confirm that it's the pump making noise?

also, just a bit of free advice ... not saying i'm right and you're wrong ... it's more of a "if the shoe were on the other foot"-sorta thing ...
at most, with your engine (from what you've disclosed), i think you would only need to focus on oil cooling and volume ... so spend on a race-type oil cooler and a pan with increased capacity (maybe even a dry sump system) ... but i think your engine would be just fine running the 80-85 psi regulator. just two cents ...

Only used a stethescope to see where it's making noise - at the front cover right at the pump.
Have not taken the front cover off yet.
Taking an educated guess on it, but it appears to be that.

Already have the oil cooler, lines, oil cooler fan, etc on it.

Just trying to see if anyone else has had a problem with those pumps, or any experience with them.

Whats the oil temp and pressure reading?

Didn't give it time to heat up the oil much - didn't pay attention to temp at the time. Pressure was at 100psi, but oil is cold, drops a little when the oil heats up.

Did you make sure the torrington (sp?) bearing (thrust bearing)was seated and not crushed behind the e-shaft pully?

Yes, very careful about that. I've made that mistake before.

It turned out to be a bad oil pump.

Did you put the distributor drive gear on the e-shaft correctly? The chamfer is supposed to face towards the housing i.e., face towards rear or engine.
