oil leaks
 

I just bought an '82 gsl. I found two oil leaks. The oil pressure is good. One is on the driver's side of the engine between the front housing and the front rotor housing. The other is between the rear rotor housing and the rear housing. Both are about an inch long and are right on the edge of the engine where "mazda 12a" is stamped. I wanted to know if JB weld would seal the leak or if there is another fix besides pulling the engine apart.

u need to tear it down. U could try JB Weld and creat a bit of a mess, but it will still leak oil...

Yeah, you need to replace the dowel pin O-ring. I've never found anything to stop this leak. I wouldn't personally go through the trouble unless it's time to rebuild anyway. It just is a little messy, and a quart of oil now and then is much cheaper than a rebuilt engine.

My 83 has been leaking in the front for two years. A $1 quart of oil a month is a lot cheaper than a $2000 rebuild. Just don't park it on you parents drive way on the grass in the front yard, cause it will leave its mark.

If you have the tools and the time it's not $2000, it's more like $100!

$90 for the kit + $5 for the Hylomar. And a lil' bit for tax :)

I had a 82 that did that on the front, about where the Mazda sign is. I cleaned the dickens out of it with alchohol, dried it, applied JBWELD. And sure enough it did not leak where it had been leaking. The leak traveled down just below where my JB ended. Did some more JB. Same results. Leaked. Let it leak like that for some months prior to the rear rotor coming apart at 40mph one morning. Yeah, the only real fix is to tear it apart and put new O'rings on the dowel pins that are located in that area. There's a o'ring at each joint on that side of the engine fyi. If you tear down to fix that simple 2 dollar o'ring you have to spend another 4-5 hundred for other gaskets etc.

Yeah, but thats one of those repairs that gets more expensive as you get into them. The motor has 183000 miles on it so when you pull it down you need to lap the side houseings, change the oil seals, probably change the apex seals, hell how about a nice street port or a bride port, $$$$$ maybe that intake i've been looking at, and the turbo or some nos. Damn, i need to change the exhaust to. Better make that $3-4000.00.

I think i'll just keep adding oil till she blows. Thats what the extra engines are for.:)
