Oil and Cooling on an rx7 fc NA

Hi all,

I have recently bought a 1988 RX7 FC NA on 55000 miles.
About 4 years ago the car was sat for about 6 years.

The first things to do on my maintenance list is to change the oil.
the previous owner used Royal Purple SAE 10w-30 synthetic Oil.
is this oil correct?
Should I be using a different oil?
are there any side effects or changing the oil on a system that has been running a certain type/brand in it for some time?

My second part is for the cooling system.
whilst the engine is only on 55,000 miles I would like to make sure the cooling system is in the best condition.

I have driven the car several times and the temperature stays low never goes over 1/4 of the temperature gauge so that is hopeful.

the radiator looks old so I feel that needs changing. I have seen people saying that the koyorad radiators are good.
different radiator fan to ensure efficiency
should I also replace the coolant pipes and thermostat whilst I’m at it to ensure there are no build ups/blockages.

as-well as this what the best coolant to use on it. Can it have side effects if I use a coolant it hasn’t been using?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.
Tom

welcome to the board, Tom. :)

oil? i'm not sure i want to touch that. what i will say is you need to consider that it should leave little to no residue after combustion because it's what your MOP will be pumping into the chambers. viscosity and change intervals should be tailored to you and your use of the car. barring that, follow your owner's manual.

for the cooling system, it's worth it to replace everything (hoses, coolant, thermostat, etc.) so you know what you have. flush it well!

as for the radiator, use your judgement. if it looks ratty and worn out, then by all means, replace it. a quality aluminum unit is worth your time and money. for the fan, i would keep the OEM clutch and shrouding, unless you are planning many big mods. i would not recommend changing anything (fan-wise) if you're just driving the car in a stock or near-stock form.

i use 50/50 of Prestone (i get the undiluted one and mix it myself) and distilled water. it has worked for me for decades.

hope some of this helps.
