Need to identify A/C compressor, help
 

As my 93 FD went to the A/C shop to have the system checked for leaks before i recharged it with r12, the shop notified me that the compressor has a large leak and recommended to replace and not rebuild.

I have heard that the FD's have two different compressors. One installed at the plant and the other installed when it came to port.

I have no idea how to identify which one i need.

Can someone help me out how to identify?

I already took the undertray off and looked around but i cannot find anything that identifies what compressor it is.

You may be able to see the tag that is located on the back of the compressor. Take the throtle elbow off and with a light and a mirror you might be able to see it. Probaly will have to move some stuff out of the way.

Did the A/C shop say where on the compressor the leak is? I dont always believe what alot of shops say unless you know them and they are trustworthy.

FWIW, do you know for a fact that the compressors are different? I have a feeling that even if they are different it will work provided the fittings are the same. I know they are different for R12 and R134a.

i doubt there is any difference between the compressors, if any i'm sure either will bolt up to the bracket, have the same offset and have the same line fitting sizes.

I was looking in the service highlights manual and came across the description of the compressor used in the FD it is a nippon denso TV-14. It makes no mention of two different compressors. However, it does mention the two different systems ( MANA and nippon denso units). So this is further evidence that they are the same:icon_tup:

ooooohh ok, thats where i got confused.

When I called the local dealership and they want to know which system i have, they are supposed to be closed on weekends but i know a guy who works extra hard at the dealership in my town so thats who i talked to, he told me the computer asks for what system i have

He doesnt know much of FDs so he really couldnt provide me with any info.


I read the whole HVAC section of the service highlights, and indeed i do see that the only difference is that the Mana and NipponDenso system is the reciever/drier.
On page 410 it gives two pictures of both the MANA and NipponDenso driers.
I took a pic of the drier on my FD and compared to what the book says and it appears i have the Nippon Denso system according to this.

Notice the window on the NpD system is directly on top of the drier, which is exactly what my FD has, while the MANA has the window a few centimeters away

if you give them the VIN number of the car they should be able to filter out exactly which compressor it has.

Although that is from what I understand to be one of the only visual differences; The fittings are different and threads are different on the whole system. Unfortunately I do not know if the fittings are the same on the compressor.

Also AFIK the compressor is discontinued; you can not get from mazda. Thats what Ray told me when I needed a part for my compressor:(.

Were you able to see the sticker on the back of the compressor?

Not yet, i'll look at it tomorrow.

They are both Denso TV-14C's and they are the same. In fact, it's really the only part of the system that is interchangeable; I have used a compressor from a Denso touring system on my Mana (base) unit.

Generally it's the shaft seal that leaks on these; the rest of it holds up pretty well. Rebuilts are available from several sources. The only concern I would have is confirming that the oil in a replacement unit is compatible with what is already in the system. And stay with R12.

Can the shaft seal be purchased separately or in some kind of rebuild kit? Is it at all realistic to rebuild the compressor using non-specialized tools?

My ac guy whos been doing it for 40 years said rebuilding these compressors is like pulling teeth.
