Is my engine blown?

I have an 89 N/A 5-speed convertible that ran pretty good for a while. A few backfires here and there, and some smoke, but nothing that seemed too bad for the price and mileage (about 126,000 mi). After replacing the clutch, I took it for a test spin. I accelerated fast to see how the new clutch felt (my old one would slip in 2nd and 3rd under full throttle). Around 50 mph, it suddenly started sputtering as if it lost a rotor...well, that's best way I know how to explain it. I barely made it home. I could put the pedal to the floor and get virtually no response. I just got it started after sitting for several months. There was enough smoke to kill a person. After running at a high idle for a while (it would barely run at idle), the smoke stopped. But if I shut it off for a little while, the smoke started all over ago. I floored it for a little while, hoping for a miracle, but the rpms wouldn't go over 7,500. I tested the resistance on both coils and the CAS. They were fine. Both leading plugs had a little more oil on them than the trailing, but didn't look that bad. I haven't checked anything else yet. Does it sound like i need to prepare for a rebuild, or could it be something simple that i overlooked.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. In my sig line you will find a link to the online FSMs and other rotary related reading. DL what ever you need and start reading. Be sure to read the FAQs too.

First thing to do is a compression test, then go from there.
