To much voltage from alternator kills my 1985 GSL-SE

1985 GSL-SE
13B EFI
5 Speed Transmission
340,000 Miles
All stock- had the car for 15 years

I Started having a issue with the car dying every minute or so, and the alternator was getting very hot, due to high voltage.

Took off the alternator and had it checked and it was tested as good, putting out the correct voltage. The internal voltage regulator was also good.

The parts store decided to replace the alternator, but I still have the same issue.

With the large wire disconnected from the alternator the car runs fine and doesn't die.
When I test the voltage on the alternators large post, with the wire disconnected it says 30 volts.

I'm lost, in my mind if I had a short I would think the voltage would be lower.

Thanks for any help on this matter!!!!!!!!!

30 volts!! That's a good way to catch on fire or blow up. I'd start by tracing the wires on the alternator per the fsm.
