MOP removal (FD)
 
Got my engine out of my 93 FD Jap spec for a rebuild. I am going single turbo with a Motec M4 and also want to run pre mix, I have unbolted the metering pump (3 bolts) and removed the oil lines to the housings. What do I need to do to finish this job? Just make a blanking plate to take the place of the pump? Or do I need to remove stuff from within the front cover once it's off?

What about the spray jets? How do i deal with these? And there look to be vac lines to the banjo bolts for the jets. Why? I take these may help atomization or something? Do I just make blanking bolts with seals under the heads for the jets, or should I remove the jets entirely?

my advice - DON'T DO IT - KEEP THE MEETERING PUMP - the metering pump sprays the oil in such a way that the oil gets to places that won't get lubed by premix. the OMP injectors are located specifically to direct the oil to critical points on the rotors. If premix/fuel borne oil was suficent Mazda could just have injected the oil into the intake at the throttle body like a 2 stroker.
If you rely solely on premix it only takes one time improperly mixing or forgetting to mix, to destroy the engine!

Problem with keeping it is the Motec (now thinking of going M800 as the M4 doesn't have facilities to run different impedance injectors..) would have to have some sort of map installed and an output dedicated to running the pump, or fitting an earlier type none electronically controlled one, the details of what interchanges with what and how escape me.

As it will solely be used on track pre mix isn't a problem as I always take fuel with me, and don't have to remember to mix in the tank. But I se where you are coming from and it certainly wants consderig. Did Mazdas factory race engines use a MOP, or pre mix though?

every professional race team I have seen running rotary engines uses pre mix. My current engine builder built engines for a Mazda sponsored IMSA GTO team in the late eighties and demands pre mix in his engines. with a track only car it removes one more potential problem.

I agree for a TRACK ONLY car premix might be ok - But track engines are rebuilt very frequently - My tuner runs Premix & an OMP on his E-Production motors - I think he uses the older style mechanical OMP
I think the best solution is to run an OMP w/ a remote resevior like the Aircraft Rotarys do - and use 2 stroke Racing oil in the OMP. and full synthetic in the sump - No Hassle with Premix.
