Missing, funky ignition timing......
 

Ok, I need some advanced help from some of the rotary gods.
My dad has an 87 N/A that we bought a while back. The people we bought it from said that they had a new engine put in it at about 100k miles. The odometer reads about 145k miles.
OK, We have been running the car for a while now. When we first got it started(it was in a field for about 2 years) it ran fine, you know, lots of smoke, things that you would expect from a rotary that has not been started in a long time.
But anyways, my dad has owned a few fb's a few years back. He said that it does not run as smooth or has as much power as one that he had. He dinked with the timing, and was not satisfied. :confused:
So,(and I know this was a bad move) he moved the modules inside of the timing thing. (you know, the black things with the wires coming out.) From what I have read from doing research, these are supposed to remain at a fixed position. :(
The point is, We cannot seem to get it run just right. if we advance, we get power, but major sputter. from what I have read, it is not detonation we are dealing with. He runs premium all the time.
I would like to know if we have a blown engine or seals. When we did compression test before it was running. we got 100's all across.
Help!!!

I forgot to mention, at the stock positions, if we advanced we would get the same affect sputter, power
retard, less power, smoother.

is 100 good? not sure tho.. 100/14.7 is 7:1..
maybe it's just rotary nature to get lower #'s when doing a comp. test.. but maybe try the atf treatment?
