Machine shop botched gear bearings
 

I just picked up S5 stationary gears from a machine shop. I had new bearings pressed in them....I believe they ruined them. I'll get some pics up as soon as I can. The rear is particularly bad. One real "nice" scar and several smaller and less deep scars. The hole for oil passage is off centered. The press in tab is also of course off center and when they pressed that in they did a little damage to the gear.

The front isn't nearly as bad..but it's still not pretty.

i agree they did a crappy job but those scratches ur talking bout is no big deal. u can do that with ur finger nail. u can even see finger prints.

I completely disagree i could have done that better with a block of wood and a hammer.They need to make it right. You paid for a professional to work on it not a backyard hack

Yup, I would not install those in an engine. Go back there and get your money back!

remember always do it right the first time never second guess. its really not hard to put bearings in so if i were you i would take them back and tell them to make it right

The finger prints are in an oil film left over from them pressing the bearings in. All the pictures I took are more than just discoloration scrapes they are marks that I can feel with my finger.

I talked to the owner on the phone. His claim is that they used a custom cut aluminum to press the bearings and there is no way aluminum could have damaged the bearing. This is also the same guy who had a look of fear on his face when I picked them up and was looking them over. He knows he did a questionable job on them. i was suspicious when I saw them in his office...better lighting showed alot more of what I didn't want to see.

What is most frustrating is that it took them 3 weeks to do that kind of work. When I dropped them off he said to pick them up in the AM. I actually forgot about them and a week and a half later I stop in to get them. Not done and he's not on property. I call next day and he says he'll have them in the AM. I call next day they're not done and he's not on property. A week later I call and he tells me to pick them up next morning...and that's the work they did.

I'm taking them back to him on Monday to show him the damage. I'm expecting a refund on labor and him to buy me new bearings.

Taking them back on Monday got delayed by my work schedule. Talked to him today. The owner insists he'd use those engine parts if it were him, but agreed to replace my bearings. Going thru my local Mazda dealership to speed up the process.

I should have my bearings by Friday. Get them pressed by a different shop early in the next week.

Everything was worked out. Original shop, Tristate, bought me new bearings and refunded my labor cost. Picked up the newly pressed bearings from the new shop, Kings, today. They are near perfect. Assembly of the engine is Sunday.

yep, at least they made it right even though you were out time and wasted gas.

although they may have technically been fine, it was definitely a hack job with metal shavings on their aluminum drift.
