Can a mazda dealer cut a new key from the vin or would it be cheaper to replace the ignition?
88 vert

Take a registration or title to the dealer. They will cut a new key.

A locksmith can cut a key from any of the locks that match the ignition cylinder. Just take out a door or hatch cylinder and take it to a locksmith.

How much would the mazda dealer cost? Ford charges $100 plus the key for newer styles I'm pretty sure

Doors and ignition are different keys sadly.

Dealer charged me $18 for a key to be made for a 88 vert.

Copied from an original or cut from the vin.

Also looks like the ignition lock has been replaced once before

Cut from vin. Had to take registration to show proof of ownership.

AAA as well as others will actually travel to your car and cut a new key, without removing the lock cylinders. I think AAA charged my dad $140? when he had them make keys for my brothers ford ranger.

WIth "old" car like FD3S if you don't want to spend a lot of money you can go to a car wreker and buy a key+cylinder from another car.

I used a Fiat cylinder on my old 1993 320i.

Without electronic control you can only attach the wires and car start (you need only to find a cylinder that have similar dimension with the one from the FD)

I pay 10 € for this and about 2 hour of work around the steering wheel

I'm buying an 86 that has no keys. I'm glad my only option isn't to replace the entire cylinder. This is the third of fourth thread I've read that says Mazda dealerships and locksmiths would be able to cut a new key using the VIN.

No offense, but unless the car is a project, why buy a car that you can't hear run?.Why are there no keys?(ding,ding,ding!!!)...
..
I just replace the ignition, its a 20 minute job..I'm used to it by now.

I just took off the ignition and brought it to a locksmith. $30 later I have a different key for it

It will be a project car. Plus, I'm getting it dirt cheap from a family member who works on cars. They got it originally to work on it themselves but never got around to it. They heard how much I like RX7's and they're basically giving it away to me for Christmas.

I'd replace the ignition, but it seems far easier to get a key made so I have the ignition key that works with my doors too.

I called Ray at Malloy Mazda just to get a genuine Mazda blank. I was gonna have some local shop cut it. Ray asks, "Would you like me to cut that too?" Didnt realize they could do it from the VIN, I gave him the VIN and he sent me a new key. Total price under $8 (this was about 3 years ago so the price may have changed) Works so smoothly in all the locks and ignition.

If only it would have been the stock ignition
