I'm a noob - '79 RX7 sat for years, what else should i do?
 

Hello there, i'm an RX7 noob. I just recently picked up at 79 RX-7 for FREE, mint body with just a couple dings, used interior with only 2 small tears. Reason was, it sat for.. i think 8 years?

We've replaced:
Coolant, Oil, Gas, Fuel Pump and Filter, Slave Cylinder components, and have gotten it to run.

So, just yesterday we took her for a ride down the street and back, since it's got California plates and hasn't been registered for years (and we saw a cop, got scared, and turned around REAL quick) and i've noticed the clutch is basically grabbing by a thread, or so i think so.

Accelerated the old 200K mile 12a to like 5k (i think, just about 1'o clock on the tach) and slammed it into 2nd, and i hear that sound of someone not letting the clutch out all the way, pretty crucially. of course, i did let it out.. but the clutch was slipping hella bad.

My buddy on this project, thinks it might just have gotten brake fluid on it, causing it to slip.. is this not a bad theory? What would be a good way to rid it of the fluid besides yanking the tranny off. i was thinking intentionally burn the clutch, to burn the fluid off??

little about me:
i'm decently car saavy. i'm mainly a honda guy. i've got me a Turbo'd civic that runs low 13's right now on street tires, and i did all the work myself, except tuning. i rock a HMT kit, as it's the only way to go :icon_tup: i've always wanted to learn about rotaries, and this is my chance. i've been reading around on this forum for the past few days, and it looks like i'll have some fun with it.

With 200k on the clock, it sounds like a worn out clutch which needs replacement very soon. I would not try burning what little clutch you have left, even if it did have fluid on it. Baby it until you can schedule a replacement.

SA clutches last 100K on the average. 200K it needs replacement most likely.
