Hey guys,

This is my first post!

I had my engine rebuilt about 14 months ago by Mazda's Plus here in Sacramento. They have since gone out of business. So when I had an oil leak I took it to my local Mazda dealer. He recommended a revised pan and I said fine $$$ lots of it. That's when the fun began.

I received the car back leaking much worse than it was, so I took it back. They said I now had a split seal on my primary oil pump I said fix it more big $$$$$$$. Got a call from them saying the work was done but the car is still slowly seeping oil, this time from in between the wafers, they now were recommending a rebuild.

I went right over and picked up the car and found oil to be pouring out of the pan area not seeping. so I took it back and asked them to show me the problem. It appeared to me the pan was leaking oil and not the wafers. Oil appeared to be wicking up the wafer seam so I said reseal the pan and fix the leak. I dropped by the following Monday to have a look at their progress. There there were no gaps between the wafers on Friday and now there were. Furthermore I was told that the long bolts were loose and required re-tightening, what a revelation! To replace the pan they had to drop the sub frame it should have been obvious there was a problem at that time. They re torqued the long block bolts on the bottom and resealed the pan and wallah no leaks whatsoever.

It's pretty obvious I was being played, cant prove it though. Block bolts don't just come loose that's why the are torqued to spec. I'm pretty sure they loosened them up to get more work/$$$ out of me.

The dealer is still recommending a rebuild and said so on the paper work, but privately said he believes the problem is fixed. I put paper down on my garage and not a drop since I brought it home.

Yesterday I detected black oil balls the size of a grain of sand (just a couple) in my coolant reservoir. I immediately took the car and had both a pressure check done on the coolant system an in addition had a Block test (the blue chemical that turns yellow if you have a problem) performed. Both test indicate no leaks of any type . I was told it was 15 years of built up residue in the reservoir.

My quandary is with this bad paper on the car I must now disclose
the fact that the repair done last is without warranty and the dealership is recommending a rebuild for a permanent repair.
I am currently selling this car. And because I am an honest fellow I am cheap selling it because of their recommendation and the hidden known flaws laws.

The thing is this car is a 44500mi car in pristine condition and books for over $16000 and I now feel forced to sell it far below market.

Not only did these guys rip me off but they also screwed me on selling the car for value.

Am I wrong.

This car runs absolutely perfect and just passed smog
on12/15/07 with no problem.

So whats your question?

I dont know what the "wafers" are that the dealer pointed out, unless you mean the rotor housings and plates? They are the primary components that make up a rotary engine "block" and they held together by the long tension bolts you had re-torqued.

If the terms you use are the same as what the dealer used then you were certainly taken for a ride by somebody that doesnt know rotaries at all. I would find a decent local rotary shop and take it in for a second opinion. If they give it a clean bill of health can you forget about the "bad paper" from the dealer or is there some sort of record that goes on?

One thing to note though... Even with only 44k miles if that is still the original engine there is no guarantee how much longer it will go, however it sounds like your motor is probably in good shape at this time. I dont think you will have a hard time selling the car for its fair market value to in informed buyer, list it at what you want to get for it and eventually the right person will find it.

I guess part rant, part Tale and part question about my options.

Sorry rotor housings my bad, and yes the motor has been rebuilt,
8000mi on new motor.

The Buyer is going to get all the records I have so he will know.

Yes I intend to get a second opinion. I'm trying to get ahold of Karack, he's in my area. Can anyone give me some help with that? There's no phone listing for him that I can find.

Hate to bring it up, but this is why you don't bring your RX7 to a dealership and/or you should always do your own work to these vehicles. That way you know exactly what's going into your motor and if something fucks up, you know who to blame. You live, you learn.

Hope you get everything resolved, but it sounds like the dealer is just giving you the run-a-round, and at your expense to top it off!

have you called a rotary specialty shop? there are several of them that frequent these boards and would be of immense help to you. NEVER trust a dealership! the only person i ever consider talking to from a dealership is Ray Crowe (he's the man, but in VA). if you need parts, talk to him. as far as finding the actual problem and getting it fixed, you should be able to get plenty of help if you ask the right people. if you're looking for a budget rebuild, Kevin (rotary resurrection, if i remember correctly) will be the guy to talk to. otherwise, check out the venders' section for shops to talk to and try to narrow down what is really happening.

your car is in just about the best condition i've seen for an RX7 in a long time, it'd suck to have to sell it because a dealership screwed you over.

I sold this car to myself 15 years ago. I worked at the dealership.
It's time to say good by to it, so no matter what it's history. I now have other priorities. As far as I know this car runs perfect. What the dealership said does not make sense. I don't think my rocket needs a rebuild it just has paper that say it does. Which means I have to disclose a potential hidden flaw.

I am seeking a second opinion but I so far have been unable to find someone in the Sacramento area to trust. From what I have read on this forum Karack is the man in this area, but so far he remains an elusive Quarry.

A possible new chapter on this car...
 
I'm trying to buy the car now (working with the current owner), but my concern is over the "recommended rebuild" by Senator Mazda. Looks like a 2nd opinion is what's needed on this and based on the threads, it sounds like Karack is the right person for this.

I'm too new on the forum to PM Karack, so is there anyone else that is willing to ping him for me to potentially make diag arrangements?

The current asking price is fair if a rebuild is NOT necessary. If so, I need to walk away from the car. We would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.
