Is Hylomar really necc?
 

I'll be rebuilding my motor very soon..

all new internals and new Rotor housings and complete gasket set...


in my part of the world.. I can't find hylomar for the Life of me.. I don't wanna order it unless i REAAALLLYY have to...


I can find black and red RTV silicone's... but they dry.. unlike the hylomar.. which is "semi drying"


so can I just use Vaseline for the oil rings and coolant seals.. and RTV for the legs of the housings and Oil pan?


is there any Crucial areas that need Hylomar?

Hylomar is not required. It's nice to have though. I've built many engines using vaseline on the seals and an off the shelf sealer on the legs. Permatex's High Tack works pretty well on the legs of the housings too.

Really you only need something to hold the seals in place while you set the irons. Vasoline works but it's not nearly as tacky as Hylomar. Hylomar is also an excellent sealant in and of itself so it's serving an added purpose that vasoline won't. Vasoline will also tend to swell the seals. If you use it don't dope up the seals and then let them sit for hours before trying to assemble the engine. You'll have problems.

i didnt use hylomar i used rtv and its holding seal just as good

We have hylomar at Advance Auto Parts.... at least my store does. I really like the stuff even though it may not be necessary... I kinda horded some fro mthe other stores to make sure I could find some if I wanted..

i've done a rebuild with no hylomar. its no big deal, the MAIN function is to hold the water seals in place during assembly and possibly help seal things up. you just have to be a little more careful with the water seals and move a little quicker when you use vaseline, as c ludwig said.

Hylomar is great stuff but as others have already stated just rock the vaseline and be done with it. It will be fine.

I didn't have enough hylomar when I rebuilt my engine, it sucked. It is the best stuff out there at least I think it is. Can someone post a link where to buys some?

Hylomar will save your coolant seals and keep your coolant seals from expanding. If you have a race motor and plan on rebuilding it often, this is great stuff.

Don't you hate throwing away good coolant seals just because they're out of shape :(

Dont use vaseline, it will make your rubber seals swell.

Mazda even recommends using petroleum jelly for assembly...

I used Crisco, on the reccomendation of Pineapple racing...Worked Great....

In the DIY RE dvds, they use no hylomar on their engine, only vaseline to install the seals.

I love the smell of Crisco when the engine first fires up. I use Hylomar on the water seals but Crisco on all the hard seals to keep them in place. Much better than Vaseline.

You can use petroleum jelly for the metal parts just fine for the rebuild.. I would not recommend useing it for the coolent seals as thay will swell up and change shape... been there and done that....

as for the Hylomar it is not requiered to do the rebild however it is help full.. as a replacement for Hylomar you can use RTV as well...

I cant find hylomar anywhere local.

I would imagine than a non hardening sealant like Hylomar would be nice for an engine that requires frequent rebuilds. Easier to get it off the housings than RTV.
