Hylomar??/permatex??

what can you use besides hylomar? can prematex 2 be used instead?
i know hylomar stays tacky, can seal tiny gaps and can withstand temps up to 600 degrees. no one has it around i would have to order it. i called up a shop yesterday and they said they would have some for me today.. i called up the shop and they said the warehouse doesnt stock the hylomar anhymore but use prematex 2 instead now.

Depends on what you are sealing. Hylomar is usually available at most Napa Auto parts.
Part # is 765-2682.

using it for coolant rings and so on..but thanks for the part number this could be alot of help. i called 5 stores here in sonoma coun ty none had it. ! ok i just called napa auto parts. and the neartest tube of this stuff is in texas!?!? i am in CA what does mazda use as a factory sealent?

RX7 allnight 04-25-07 04:18 PM

does hylomar contain - "meth dichloride" carrier solvent which is phased out most countries worldwide.? someone said they dont make this stuff anymore? this sucks why cant i just go downtown and get a tube i mean geez

NO ONE HAS HYLOMAR- i guess that's why mazda trix / racing beat sells it. Napa Auto Parts no longer buys it

I got a couple tubes from my local CarQuest. They had it at the local wharehouse, took a couple hours to get it to me.

RX7 allnight 04-25-07 05:23 PM

i called car quest. they said they only carry permatex. he didnt know if it was permatex "#2". or the permatex "HPF" i called one shop around town one guy says he has more than a half of a tube left and i could have it. maybe this will get me going till i get another.

jgrewe 04-28-07 09:21 PM

I looked at my unopened tube today and its made by Permatex and says Hylomar on the tube, they(Carquest) should be able to get it for you. I can get the #'s off of it for you if you want.

What you got was old stock. Permatex was producing Hylomar under license. They quit making it a while back. Valco is now the importer of Hylomar. Check with them for distributors. FWIW, after using the stuff Permatex was making and then going to the newer stuff I can say there is a definate difference between the two. The new stuff is better in many regards IMO. I use it for a lot more than retaining o-rings.

You can use several different things to retain o-rings if that's all you're doing and don't want to try to hunt down Hylomar. A search will turn up things like vasoline and regular silicone.

Crisco it's more than just for cooking. LOL. Seriously nothing beats it for holding things in place I use it for holding the coolant seals in place also works great for holding all the hard seals in place on the rotors. And I love the smell of it on start up. Smells like your cooking up some french fries. And if you think I'm bullshitting watch this video http://www.rebuildingrotaryengines.c...ty_water_seals I'm not the only one who uses this stuff.

if i can use crisco (lard?) to hold my water seals and my rotor parts cant i just use vasoline (patroluem jelly) for my water seals as well? Hylomar makes a seal unlike all olf these other products how usefull is this?

The Crisco is a lot more tacky and thicker than vasoline and doesn't melt like the vasoline does. Yes you can use vasoline but trust me you'll like using the Crisco much better. Hylomar is a great product also but think to yourself does a coolant seal which is designed to make a seal really need another sealant to help do it's job. I've never taken a factory built motor apart that has had Hylomar inside it. The Hylomar is just used to hold the coolant seals in place. If you want to spend the extra money for the Hylomar that's fine but Crisco is a whole lot cheaper.

make's alot more sense now, thanks 13btnos
