How to Pick a turbo.

For those of you looking for how to pick out a turbo this isnt the thread you thought it would be, I couldnt find a thread like that so I am starting one. Or maybe a collection point for people to input thier specific turbos caricteristics and performance levels.

Does anyone know how to determine what turbo best fits the application your looking for? Is there a list out there for the various manufacturers that would help determine what each turbo is suited for? I know each manufacturer probably has a list like this, but has anyone compiled them into a data base yet?

Or is this a pipe dream that everyone desires to experience?

If enough good information accumulates here ondifferent turbo specs or locations for the information this thread could be made sticky eventually. If not it will die:D

i think so. it would be great if things were as simple as this. however, there are way too many variables to consider, not least of which is the owner/driver him(her)self.

high compression v. low compression
high boost v. low boost
flow characteristics (efficiency, A/R housing, impeller trim, etc.)
street car v. racecar
quick car v. fast car

these are just off the top, and it hasn't yet factored in the differences between people, but you can see that a thread like this is either going to be the world's greatest scroll for turbo-knowledge, or one of this board's greatest battlefields. :D

do you remember the "no replacement for displacement"-thread?:D ...

yah, step one is to decide what the car is gonna be for, how much hp you want to make, what engine you are using, how much lag you want. that makes all the difference in the world. once you know all that it shouldn't be that hard to pick one.

It's more through experience - much of the info is still "black voodoo magic" and a lot of tuners who are in-the-know just won't give out the info easily.

I do have a quick write-up on turbo options for the FC3S here:
http://fc3s-pro.com/TECH/MODS/TURBO/fullturbo.htm

Although specifically for the FC's, it can be applied to most 13B applications.

Ted, I was afraid of that But I kinda knew that was a very good possibility.
