How much is too much for rebuild/street port?

Hi,

My wife recently decided to get all the seals replaced on her 10AE and just got a quote from a shop. I feel like it might be a little too much for what we get, but we honestly don't know.

Is $10k too much for this?

Pull engine out / tear apart, clean inspect, clearance..
streetport and rebuilt..
clean primary injectors and replace secondary injectors with larger 750cc's
New heater hose
New upper and lower radiator hoses
New engine mounts

in my opinion, yes, that sounds like too much for the things you listed.

For context, I paid about $8k for a (FD) rebuild with brand new irons, cnc porting, runner's ported, rotors lightened/balanced/clearanced, combustion pockets cleaned with the cnc, rotor faces clearance, rotor housings refinished, milled for 12.7mm studs, oil mods done, water jackets cleaned up, etc., etc., etc. Granted, I pulled my motor and shipped it to that shop..

$10k seems a bit high for what was mentioned unless there is a notable currency imbalance.

if you bought all of the parts brand new (engine, clutch, hoses, mounts) you would be right around the 10k mark.
so 10k sounds high to me as well, unless they are replacing all the gaskets and seals in the engine, plus housings (they are wear parts)
etc etc.

on the other side, its an old car and there will be some stuff that breaks/is bad when you tear it down.
for labor its 10-12 hours to pull the engine, and another 6-10 to rebuild it, so there is that chunk

it will likely be higher still because anything that breaks or they find along the way that wasn’t already included will be added to the bill.

She ended up giving the go-ahead. Once we have a list of what was done I suppose we can discuss if it was too much. I don't think she planned on spending this much to begin with, so we'll see
