how long to rebuild a rotary?
 

i am looking to buy a "project" FD for this summer that has blown seals, and i was wondering how long you think it would take for us (my dad, me, my nosey neighbor that likes to help, and a few friends of mine that are into cars) to rebuild it

none of us have any experience on a rotary, but my dad and I worked on his TR-7, my one friend helped his brother work on his CRX (it's very nice if i may say), and my neighbor had some ponitac years ago and he did ALL the work on it, but i know i would like to learn to work on my own car

also (since i have your attention), is it better to remove the engine by itself or with the transmission....i've seen people do it with the transmission and could never understand why....i've never pulled an engine before

the FD has a pull type clutch.. which makes it a bit of a Pita to remove while on the car.. some ppl including myself find it easier to take them out together... and in some cars reaching the bell housing bolts on top of the block is a real hassle...


as for the rebuild.. there's enough resources out there to make it possible.. (FSM and bruce's video is all u need)

u just need to correct tools to measure that everything is re-usable or needs replacing...
the longest and most annoying part is the cleaning and measuring process...

the actual assembly and dissasembly is not really that hard... ASSUMING u have all the parts u need next to you.. and no trips required.. 2-3 weekends should be enough depending on your facilities and the pace u want to move...

all the secondary stuff that goes on the shortblock after it's been assembled.. well that's a whole nother story.. the FD has alot of "little" things to it compared to the FC..especially if ur retaining the stock seq twins and emissions systems

thanks a lot, the transmission thing always seemed useless unless you were doing work on your transmission

i assume there is a list somewhere of parts/tools needed, i'll search for it and post it here if this question comes up again

well, i'm hoping to get the car this coming summer, keep it in the garage, and have it finished by january, and if you say only 2 or 3 weekends depending on parts, then i think it'll be enough time

i think it is a good excuse to go single, right?

this will also be a daily driver with reliability mods, somebody please convince me that i'm not making a completely stupid mistake (all i hear is that it's a bad daily driver, then one or 2 people who have actually done it say it is fine)

As for pulling the tranny or not with the engine, my recommendation is to pull the tranny with the engine *if* you are reinstalling it using stock motor mounts. It can be done, but for newbies it can be frustrating to line up the tranny & engine and also get the mounts lined up. With aftermarket mounts, you can wait until the last minute to put those in.
