housing/iron leg sealant

ive begun rebuilding my s5 NA shortblock and i had a question about the sealant for the legs of the rotor housings. i remember reading some time ago that i am NOT supposed to use black RTV sealant, but i cannot find any information on what i am supposed to use. any suggestions?

Wht cant you use black rtv?

PvillKnight7 07-29-09 11:30 AM

use whatever you want. FSM says silicone. given the option between black rtv and high-temp rtv i pick high-temp. compare the max temp ratings and make your own decision.

I used some black non hardening sealant (not RTV) from Carquest. I honestly don't think it matters that much. it is the tension bolts and o rings that do most of the sealing

The fine print on the back says it can be used on 2 13B's though.

My personal choice is HondaBond HT. Equivelant to 3M 1147 I believe. Seals better than RTV IMO.And it's less messy. It's a bit more $$ but well worth it.

I've been using permatex right stuff for awhile now and it works great. pricey stuff.. but tuff. I don't even buy gasket kits anymore. I re-use the front cover o-ring and dowel o-rings just smear right stuff on them before inserting.. on my last rebuild the only thing I replaced were the side seals and apex seals. so that and a bottle of right stuff was the total expense of my rebuild... roughly 300 dollars.. there's cheaper better alternatives to the coolant seals too but you'll have to figure that out for yourselves.

I just use toyota FIPG. I work at a dealership and have plenty. Works fine for me no oil leakage through the legs. Cheaper and better alternatives to coolant seals?
