Help! Ticking sound. and hisssssssing

Hey all, i know i post alot but im starting to get worried my engine is fux0r3d!! Here is the deal... at idle i idle around 750 rpms with all accessories off. I can here a ticking sound that increases with rpms, it almost sounds like injectors???? I also hear a hisssing sound with sounds likes its coming from right under the manifold.

As the engine idles i can hear sort of a sucking type sound.. it sounds like everytime the engine revolves it goes

"shhhhh" "shhhhh" "shhhh" "shhhh" and it increases with revs too.

What could this be :( .. Also, as the car idles if i blip the throttel i get a couple of semi smooth back fires... its like "pop pop" .. The engine dosent feel lumpy and revs fine.. I need some assistance with troubleshooting this.

Check your fan.. It may be hitting something.

EDIT: I think you have a 3rd gen? It may be different from my 2nd gen.

What kind of motor? 3rd gen, 2nd gen, turbo?

check for vacuum leaks. That may explain the hissing. Use some sort of flammable spray like starter fluid, and briefly spray small burst at the suspect area while the engine is idling. For example, spray a shot at the area where the manifold is connected to the block. If the RPMs surge when you spray, then you know air is being sucked in between the manifold and the block.

DO NOT OVER DOSE THE ENGINE WITH THE STARTING FLUID. DAMAGE WILL OCCUR and I am not responsible for it.

check your ignition pickups, if your main large drive pulley is a wee bit warped it make be hitting them hence the ticking noise

A propane torch is a bit safer. Use short bursts from the bottle. Propane will blow away and won't puddle on the motor like starter fluid.
