Help! Oil/air sprayer- washer direction
 

All-

I'm putting my engine together today and I can't remember which direction the washer that goes in with the oil/air sprayer. There's a metal side and a rubberish side- which faces the engine and which faces the sprayer? The shop manual doesn't show an installation for the sprayer.

Writing this will bump your post to the top. Now humor me. Where and what is a oil/air sprayer and where is this on the engine? By the way there are factory service manuals at http://www.iluvmyrx7.com I trust that oil/air sprayer is a euphemism for ??????????????? Truly curious about this. Not being a smartarse.

The thing that sprays oil into the engine- oil from the meter oil pump. Along with oil, a small amount of air can be injected also.

I have both a '93 and '95 service manual, I can't find these in either of them. I think this is a new part that has been added since the manuals were made. It came along with a engine rebuild kit, which has had parts upgraded/changed- it think this is one of those changes.

BTW, in my first post I say washer, I don't mean the copper crush washer. This part goes inside the hole.

This will bump you....I looked at the 93 manual online and in section C, pages C-77 thru C-80 reinstall the injectors, but I agree, it does not show much detail. Maybe somebody will read this and tell us which side goes toward the engine. I'm guessing the rubber toward the engine. Might ask Mazdatrix on line. Just a couple of bucks. Piece of mind etc.

I did call Mazdatrix, and they said it didn't matter which way it went, which I find hard to believe. I also called the place that rebuilt my engine, and the mechanic there 'guessed' it was rubber side out. Seems that not a lot of people have seen this thing. Maybe it's a real new addition to the engine gasket rebuild kit.

I hope it's rubber side in because that's the way I put them in, and it would be a real PITA to change them since my engine is almost completely back together!

For anyone who cares:

I just talked with Tripoint and finally found someone who knew what I was talking about and which direction they go: its rubber side in, brass side out. Its only used if you are using the new style rotor housings along with the new style oil sprayers (smaller nozzle compared to the old ones). The old style sprayers didn't use this rubber/brass part.

I noticed the same issue a while back and so I made a web page for everyone's edification:

I came to my own personal conclusion that it doesn't matter too much which way they go in. I think I put mine with the rubber facing down... but I don't recall... Let me put it to you this way, I'm not worried about it enough to take my UIM and other crap off and check!

Bottom line is that the OMP pumps a certain amount of oil out in a given time. This oil pretty much can't go anwhere but into the engine through that tiny little hole in the rotor housing. I can't see how putting that little spacer/Oring thing in one way or the other would have an advantage.

I seriously doubt that it makes a difference, but hey, go with whatever floats your boat.
