help with an FD3S

I am looking to buy an FD and I have some questions:

I am looking at a 94 with 95K miles.

Issues:
- It does not go into 5th or reverse ( possible synchros)
- he aid that someone put power steering fluid in the brake system and he didnt drive the car for 8 months and found this out. Maybe brake lines need to be replaced or maybe flush the system
- The mile counter stopped

Is the brake system thing a big issue or easy to fix. Is the speedo issue and trans issue normal on these card. I am really exited about getting an FD.

Thanks in advance,

You'll need to replace everything in the brake system. More than likely, all of the seals are compromised in the system. Not a deal breaker, but that will need to be done. You could find most of those parts used to make the fix a *lot* less expensive.

ok thats not a big deal. He said that the brakes work but after 10 min of use they heat up and dont really stop. I figure it is because of the wrong fluid. How about the gauge cluster and the tranmission?

Mahjik 03-07-11 11:27 AM

There are threads around about fixing the gauge cluster, or there are places you can send them off to be repaired. The transmission sounds like the typical 5th gear synchro problem. If you have the tools, there are instructions on the forum on how to replace it. Otherwise if you need a transmission shop to replace it, it would be almost the same price to pick up a used JDM transmission and install it.

I cant seem to find the how to side of the his website. I am pretty handy so I I can probably fix the cluster and the tranny. Can you point me in the right directions for the guides?

Thanks in advance. So do you think 8500 for this car is a good price or should i till try and lower it considering the amount of work needed to be done?

You can find the 5th Gear Synchro steps in this thread:

https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/faq-3rd-gen-other-useful-links-68640/

You can find some information around various tach/gauge problems here:

First thing would be to make sure all the connections are in place. After that, you'll just need to start troubleshooting.

If I were you, I would look for one which didn't need work to be done on it. The price is good, but it will require work and you aren't guaranteed that these are the only problems you'll run into. You should make sure to have a compression test done.

mr2dude9161 03-07-11 12:41 PM

yeah you are right. Tonight he said that he was going to try and start it since it has been sitting for a while and take me for a ride to see how it ran. He said that it has around 400Hp. and the motor has about 15000 miles after it was last rebuilt. He is the second owner and has owned it for about 9 years and he has done all of the mods to it. He also mentioned he had 4.30 gears and a heavy duty rear end. The car look very clean and it is not going to be my main vehicle. I just didnt know if I should try to lower the price a bit more.

Thanks again and I will def check out the links and also do a comp test.

That seems like a very low price for a car which sounds very modified. Either the current owner is lying about the mods on the car, has no clue about the car and is making up stuff, or the car is in terrible shape and is going to require a lot of work.

mr2dude9161 03-07-11 02:15 PM

well the only thing that is important to me is the running condition. He said that the body is in great shape, but the sunroof and truck lid is fading a bit since it is red. It has a passenger door window switch that is burned out and the seats are in rough shape. other than that everything seems fine. I am meeting him tonight so i will post and let you know.

This is a short list of mods he has

--It has a 4.30gear ratio heavy duty rear end

--heavy duty U bolt/ U joint

--resinated down pipe

--mid-pipe

--5" carbon fiber HKS exhaust

--Greddy double headed intake

--HKS triple sequential blow off valve

--Apex computer module

--Hks Computer chip

--3mm apex seals

--teflon coated rotors

--13" drilled and slotted rotors

--stage 2 clutch

Don't you need at least upgraded secondary injectors to get above 350 hp? The stock twins will start to reach their peak around that also. Find out if he upgraded the turbos and injectors, if not he is blowing smoke.

--Apex computer module

--Hks Computer chip

That is something that i would assume cannot co-exist...

--teflon coated rotors

Never heard of such a thing...

either way its not making 400hp from the list of mods...

mr2dude9161 03-12-11 04:57 PM

Yeah I am not sure that is what he said it had on the car. He does have the Apexi module installed and today we drove it around and the boost works on the apexi module both low and hi boost setting work correctly. It def is not stock and pulls real hard. He said that the turbos were redone when he did the motor build.

I dont think that he has 400 hp either, but i dont really care about that.

I am just happy that it started and runs really nice. The motor sounds really good too.
