Headrest speaker compatibility with Mazda Miata?

Hello rotary cousins - I'm visiting from over at miata.net and have a question about your cars. I'm posting it in the general forum since I'm not sure which generation applies.

Miatas use four 8 ohm 2x3 headrest speakers (actually 1-7/8" x 3-1/4"). It's a strange and hard-to-find size. I understand that some RX-7s also use headrest speakers. Is the speaker size and spec the same between the Miata and RX-7? Can I swap between them, and what model years apply?

I'm guessing that Mazda, in some bit of wisdom, might have unified speaker sizes across assembly lines.

Thanks!

I actually think that most of the headrest speakers we use come from
Miata buckets, but don't quote me.

The headrest speakers for the RX7's are only found in 2nd gen convertibles. 1988 - 1991, convertible only. Once you take the headrest apart the speakers are in their own hard plastic case, which is appx 2" x 4" ... speaker inside is 4 ohm and look to measure out to be about 2" (or little less) to 3.5" (or little less).
Numbers on the osd of the hard plastic case are F056 66 960 LH (obviously left hand) below that is (EAB - 980L)
The number on the speaker itself is: 9D05D

These are definately 4 ohm ... as it is listed on both case and speaker

I just happend to have one taken apart and was gona try and modify to install some Inifinity 3.5" rounds, but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Hope this info helps ...

Ken
