Half rebuild
 

I have a 87t2 with about 50k on the engine, and i bad seal in the rear rotor, i talked to some of the guys at KDR and they said i could strap the front hosuings together, then remove the rear housing and replace the bad seals, then just put her back together....anyone ever atempted to do this, or any feelings on half a rebuild. Im running tight on money, and would rather try this and save for a coilover setup, but any suggestions would be welcomed:)

i think the added compresion on the rear rotor would put a strain on the front rotor. usually however, when an apex seal goes in a turbo car, it takes the housing with it. meaning the housing is junk or needs lapped. if you have the engine out, you proably want to do it right and rebuild the engine

I tried 1/2 a rebuild on my engine(S4 6-port NA). It lasted another 3 months. Not worth the time as you can't really do it right. Do the whole thing right or nothing at all. You'll be happier in the long run and will have less headaches.

It's just as much work to do a full rebuild as a half, plus buying all the parts individually for half of the engine would probably run as much as a full kit.
The actual rebuild takes like a day, getting the engine apart and getting all the manifolds and accessories off took me like a month :)
Plus you can streetport it while you're in there.

I agree. If you are going to pull the motor and take it apart, you should just go ahead and replace all the seals. I've rebuilt several engines and once you get the engine open, its only another 3 minutes to get it completely apart versus halfway. And as mentioned before, there isn't a lot of $$ to be saved by buying some of the seals instead of a whole kit. Its better to go ahead and replace all the old seals while you have access to them.
