Getting ready to emissions test in CT

Located in CT and need to get the vehicle emissions tested to register it. Fairly positive it'll need to pass a sniff test. I have the factory cat that will be going on as well as a full tune up.

Vehicle has a JDM motor as well as a PowerFC running as pig rich base map.

Anything else I should do in the meantime to guarantee passing? I've heard things of hooking up an electric air pump and plumbing it into the cat?

Also, anyone located in CT and knows 'performance friendly ;);)' emissions test centers, let me know! Thanks.

if the car its pig rich its not going to pass emission trust me just make sure that you idle in the mid to low 13 and that you are running in mid to hi 14 in the low vac area also put a bottle of dry gas on the system if those help.

I think I'm going to have the tune cleaned up before I got to emissions. The base powerful map just stinks of fuel. Throw the cat back on and go!

Ok, gonna get a tune scheduled for this week/weekend. I plan on driving the thing until next winter and then start the motor build up. This winter is the body work/wheels/etc.

I was reading through some old threads on here and heard a few folks used dry gas with some good results. Might give that a shot as well.

let me know what happens..i have to pass in CT also

its not that bad just get the tune clean and the car should pass emission.

Well, EFI Logics won't tune a rotary so there goes the idea of having a tuner close by :(

Gonna have to travel a bit I guess.

There are also tricks for getting a stinky car to pass, just depends on who you're going to. Not putting the sniffer all the way in or having it clipped to the exhaust but not in the tailpipe are some I've seen.

the factory and PFC map are a little rich in the low rpm and load area because they are designed to work WITH the airpump. the air pump is used to add fresh air before the cat, mazda calls it "port air".

mazda found that the engine could not run lean enough without misfires to pass the EPA testing. so they added the air pump.

if you put a wideband on a STOCK car at idle, it will read between 16-18:1, and over 1100rpms it'll go into go into closed loop @14.7:1, which can be done without the air pump.

so if you have a dyno test, and the standards aren't too stringent, it might pass without the air pump

Problem is that it's a jdm motor with no air pump on it. I don't plan on sourcing one just to pass emissions. I'm sure there have been FD's out there who have passed with no air pump, with some creative measures I'm sure ;)

i dont plan on putting my air pump back on either... im working on fitting a universal cat to my exhaust now then goin and see what happens.

Cool, do you have any other mods done to your car? I know of a few FD's around CT, so I know you can get em to pass somehow.

I'm going to be doing a tune up on mine this weekend, throwing the cat back on and taking it to emissions next week. Might not even bother with the tune at first and see what happens with a few bottles of dry gas in the tank. If you find a decent place who is 'performance friendly' let me know.

guys you dont need to have the air pump hook my cousin car pass with out the pump and the car have some modifications.

MDD0101 09-07-11 11:35 PM
