front main seal issues

Hi All,

This is mainly an exercise in gathering data. As to how I'm going to use it, I'm not quite sure yet, but I'm open to suggestions.

Anyway, I'd like to know how many of you have experienced a leak from your front main seal. Let me know which engine it happened with. Also, if you have information as to how many miles were on the engine when it occurred, then please include that, too.

Basically, my inspiration is the curiosity as to why it seems my Rx-8's front main is leaking. In 19 years of rotaries, I've never had a front main leak on me and I've abused a few motors in the past. My Rx-8 has 55,xxx miles on it and I don't drive it hard at all. There are a few guys over on the Rx-8 board that have had the same leak, too. My main goal is too maybe find out why it leaks.

So far, I've found that the Renesis shares the same seal as the Gen III (FD) Rx-7, so I'm very curious to see if the Gen III guys have more leaks than older model engines. Which is why I included the poll.

Thanks,
Jason

okay, we have one vote from a Gen III motor, but no posts ...

i know there have to be more out there because i looked at at least 3 other threads while i was researching - nothing fruitful, but they are out there.

on another note, what about the spring on the inside of the seal. if one were to find a stronger spring, would that lend itself to resisting leakage?

just remember that the eshaft spins against the seal. too strong and the seal could be damaged over time i imagine.

I never had that problem, but I had a couple of problems with the front cover O ring. I really don't like how it just sits there.
