Flywheel install
Before I go and hammer on this with an impact and mess something up, should the flywheel slip right onto the shaft and key? (I'm new to rotary so if those aren't the right terms I'm sorry. I got the motor with the flywheel off already, had it turned and bought a new clutch. I went to put the flywheel on and it doesn't seem to just go on. I spun it until the key was aligned but it won't slip on. Is that normal? Should I just use the impact to drive it on?

It should be able to just slip right on . Make sure that the key is facing the right way beveled side down on the e-shaft and that it is in deep enough in the groove. you may also wanna make sure the groove on the flywheel is clean .
Well I guess it's going on further than I thought. The marks on the flywheel from where it's been on before. It just doesn't seem deep enough. Like the nut doesn't thread all the way on to the e shaft. Is that normal? I cleaned the channel on the flywheel before install. Key is the right way. I'm just precautious. Does anyone have a pic of installed flywheel?

Post a picture of what your working with. There not a lots of threads showing once the nut is on maybe 1 or 2 the eccentric shaft should protrude out of nut a couple mm.
I'll have to later I just had to leave for work. I have a couple of threads showing on the nut still. It slips on to the key, but I'm not sure it's far enough. There are marks from when it was on previously and it goes on to that point. I'm used to 6 bolts going into a crankshaft so this is weird to me.

Is the nut on hand tight or did you wrench it on if it on hand tight once you start wrenching it should finish seating. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it is moving in as you go and dont apply full torque till it is done seating .
It's hand tight and maybe one or two turns with my wrench. I didn't want to keep turning it down if it would cause damage. I think it's pulling the flywheel further onto the shaft. I will try it again after work or in the morning. Thanks for your help.

Keep turning keep in mind that that nut should be torqued to 362 ft lbs all said and done so don't be to scare .
Well I found out the key has a notch in it. Part of it is sticking up not allowing the flywheel on. With the key out, it slides right on. I've found the key new online for 5 dollars, but shipping is 10. Seems a little crazy. Anyone know where I can get one locally? The nearest mazda dealer is 38 miles away. Can I just grind the burr down some to get it to work?
Where are you in Illinois??? Post a picture .
You can put the key in and gently tap it down with a hammer or file the burr down.
I'm from effingham.
I took it into work filed and debuted it. I think it'll work. Hopefully I can start getting it all back together now. |
Do what Tom said . That should work. If it doesn't work let me know I'll send you one .

Here is a pic of when I stacked my motor, the focus of the shot wasn't the FW, but you can get the idea of how many exposed threads you've got.

Once I got the key filed down it went right on no problem. It's torqued to 250lbft. I have to find a torque wrench that will read 350.
How exact does it have to be on the 350lb mark?
It doesn't. Just slam it on there with an impact and be done.
That's what I did. But the impact is only rated to 250lbft and I ran it til it wasn't moving any more.
That impact gun is not going to cut it. The nut may have stop spinning with the gun but I'm willing to bet you can still turn it with by hand using a socket and a small breaker bar .
