Flywheel Counterweight?
Is the counterweight a OEM part or just a aftermarket product. I called me local Mazda parts dept and they didn't know what I was talking about. BTW it's a Exedy Chromoly Flywheel.
I have to replace other worn out parts so can you steer me to some good sites with good prices on OEM and aftermarket parts. Thanks! '88 10th AE |
The stock flywheel was cast with the counterweight in it so it can't be removed. After market flywheels have a removeable counter weight, so you have to know the year and model engine you have to get a matching counterwieght. www.mazdatrix.com and www.racingbeat.com are a couple of places that sell flywheels, and other after market performance parts, but who ever made your flywheel should make the counterweight as well. For the most part, Mazda dealers don't know much about rotary engines. They haven't been brought to the US since '95 and most dealers will either bullshit you and take your money, bullshit you, fuck your shit up and take your money, or just tell you they don't have a clue.

Rotarys that had auto trannys had removeable counter weights which have to be used when using light weight aftermarket flywheels.

yeah like he said, the counterweight you need is tha auto spec one out of the same year/model, or at least the same engine :)

Yeah I think you are totally dead on about the dealers. They said they haven't seen a rotary in ages and I said well you best learn in a year. :p:
Anyways, I found a local shop that did alot of the local rotary work in the past and showed them my flywheel. The guy wasn't sure about if this Exedy needs a counterweight or not from it's design. So I guess I'll email Exedy to make sure. :( |

Every aftermarket flywheel I've ever seen has needed a counterweight. It is cheaper for them to make one without a counterweight since there were several different counterweights needed depending on year model and such. It may also be a generic size flywheel that may fit other kinds of cars with the same size unit. I would just plan on buying a counterweight. They are less than $100 new. If you buy a used counterweight be very careful that you get the correct one. Even though different year models had different weight counterweights they aren't detectable by holding them in your hands. You can't even use a bathroom scale to detect weight differences. Only a postal scale is fine enough to detect the differences in weight between the different ones. The big differences are in the location of the weight distribution within the counterweight. Obviously inertia has a very big role on this. Ask me how I learned this! If you have the wrong counterweight installed the engine will shake violently so be careful! The safest way is to buy a new one from Mazdatrix, Rotary Performance, etc...

As for the SCC article , yeap that's the same flywheel. I'm using an ACT 6 puck ceramettalic clutch instead of the Exedy one. The flywheel was a good deal but the Exedy clutch was like $500! :eek: Can't wait to wrangle this baby into the car with a fresh engine course after 3000 miles of break in. :D Gonna rock some AutoX butt! |
