A few questions from a prospective RX-7 owner...
Hey, maybe someone could help shed some light on a few things for me...
I'm moving to the Seattle, WA area in a few weeks and I'm most definitely going to be acquiring a 93-95 RX7.. However, it is my understanding that these cars are extremely high-maintenance.. I've even been told only to buy one as a "weekend car".. What is the truth on this matter? Is it worth it to grab a 93 or 94 with 30 or 40 thousand miles on it for failry cheap? And when I DO need engine work, is it a big pain in the ass (and the wallet)? Also, if anyone knows of any good places in the Seattle area to have work done on the car (both maintenance and performance upgrades), please let me know... I've (obviously) never owned an RX7, but once I test drove one, I was hooked for good. I hope some of you guys can shed some light for me, so my first experience will be relatively easy and painless. As far as shops in Seattle Area? I suggest Atkins Rotary, they do good work. Try looking through this site. It should give you much of the information you need.
http://www.rx7turboturbo.com/robrobinette/buyaused.htm I wouldn't say the maintenance is extreme, it's just that it needs to be done religiously to avoid serious problems. Oil change every 3,000 miles. Make sure coolant, fuel filter, spark plugs, etc. are changed at regular intervals. Some use it as an everyday car, but that's not it's strongest suit. Here's just one reason for that: after a hard, or freeway run the turbos need to cool down so the bearings don't coke up. That means sitting there idling the car in the parking lot for a full minute or two. Are you really going to do that when you're already late for work, or your girlfriend is waiting impatiently inside the restaurant? |
