FD3S Non-Turbo
 

Hi,

I've got a 3rd gen with a rebuilt motor and in need of 2 new turbos. I would like to turn this into a non-turbo car (don't worry I can use my other 3rd gen as my toy) without pulling the motor to do it. I know they'll be an enormous power difference, my goal for power is stock FC horsepower and torque. Perhaps it is also possible to use FC/RX-8 parts to make this happen.

I have heard from word of mouth that this has been done with the 13B-REW, i would rather not do an engine swap for the 13b if i don't have to.

Your car, a 3rd gen RX-7, the motor in it is called a 13BREW. The motor in a second gen non turbo is a 13B.

U might be able to get the power UP TO that of the N/A FC with aftermarket ECU and other upgrades, keep in mind N/A engines have higher compression rotors in them than do the turbo engines.

At least it'd be reliable!

You might have to do a bit of porting...depending on how much power the motor produces without forced induction, you might be looking at a 1000rpm idle and producing 255hp at 8000rpm.

he doesn't want to pull the engine, which is what he would have to do to port the engine.

get a regular 13b header and make an intake

it wont be all that fast, but well, it wouldnt be a bad dailey driver

On a sidenote, I was just curious if turning a turbo car into a non-turbo (that has the same power as its non-turbo counterpart) is harder to do with piston cars than rotaries?

Also, is it difficult to turn the 13B-REW into non-turbo due to the sequential twin-turbo setup?

Plenty of people have "de-turboed" turbocharged cars before. I've heard many stories of people who'd buy a Merkur XR4Ti or a Dodge Turbo, and then finding out that the turbo centersection was removed and a blockoff plate bolted to the turbine housing where the centersection would bolt in. Car's run fine, other than being a bit doggy because of the lower compression ratio. (Actually the Mopars would run about on par with a non-turbo engine because the Turbos had a more betterful EFI setup than the non-turbos)

Yeah, just get a nonturbo 13B header or stock manifold and bolt it in place of your turbos. You'll have to have the downpipe fabricated at a shop, obviously. Remove all turbo control vacuum hoses, and cap off any nipples remaining. You'll have to cap off water and oil passages as well. Put a cone filter on the throttle body elbow and you're done.

Bah... get another car then... This FD would be ass slow.
