FC/FD 13b and drivetrain in my 1st gen

Okay, kids; I have a beautiful Dover White GS with a less beautiful 12A and drivetrain. The drivetrain has 227k/mi on it and the engine has 118k/mi and a carburetor that I can't figure out on it. Time for a swap. Now then! This process must be done in steps, or at least that's the plan, so my plan is to install the engine and then the drivetrain. Since most engines I've found come with transmissions, I'm tempted to go that route, but there's a complication with the FB driveshaft splines, length and what have you.

My assumptions: the 2nd gen rear end has different splines for the hub and bearing assembly, so I'll need new hubs, yes? Also, I assume the spline count for the FB and FC/FD are different, so I can't install the rear end without installing the trans too unless I get a custom driveshaft... am I close so far?

Basically, the whole car will have the guts of an FC or FD, but not all at once. How do we go about this?

Tyler,
Welcome to the forum.
You cannot swap the FC or FD rearend into a 1st gen and it is not even necessary for that matter.
You can use a 2nd gen N/A Transmission from 86-88 in the FB with only 1 modification. That is taking the tailshaft housing from the FB and installing it on the FC trans. It' s about a 20-30 job at tops to do that.
If you were to use a TII trans from a 2nd gen then it requires a different driveshaft, starter, clutch, etc..
89-91 N/A trans are no stronger than the earlier ones and you would have to use a custom driveshaft because the tailshaft housing will not fit from the FB to the FC on those years.
I recommend you go to the 1st gen specific section for information.
In the archive section there are threads anywhere from putting a TII motor to the REW motor in a 1st gen along with the installation of the TII trans.
Best thing to do is print out the material for reference.
After you have done alot of readiing and research if you have more questions than feel free to start a new thread.
I also recommend that you read the rules at the top of the 1st gen specific section that is a sticky. It will give you tips on searching and other things that new members such as yourself should know.

Also read the FAQ section. There is were we kept the most commonly asked questions with links attached to them.

First of all, if I can put a Ford 9" rear end in my FB, I can certainly put an FD rear end in my FB. Second, this is not first gen specific, the only thing first gen about my question is the body that the second or third gen parts are going into. Therefore, since I'm dealing with all three generations, possibly, this would be a general rotary tech support question. And third, just how many people have put FD suspension in their first gen? I doubt that's in the FAQ.

Sooo, come on rx7club, help me out. I need suspension knuckles for an FD. All the other parts are fairly easy to obtain. I found the knuckles at a dealership and work at a parts store so I can get the discount, butt that's still over a grand in just knuckles. Is there an FD graveyard somewhere?

Again, I ask, are the third and second gen axle splines the same? Can I put a third gen axle through a second gen suspension knuckle? All I need is tech info on the FC and FD. You just leave the installation of said parts to me.

Tyler

P.S. - Thanks for the welcome!
