Engine wont turn over
The car just died on me at a stop light when i tried to let the clutch out and accelerate. I tried to push start it w/ a bunch of people and the back tires are locked up and wouldn't roll. I towed it home and tried to crank over by putting a wrench on the bolt that drives all the accessories on the front of the motor(a/c, alternator and cant move shaft) Any idea on what could be wrong?
thanks for your help |
it's an s4 fc

i thought my motor was carbon locked but i took the manifold loose and spark plugs out and turned it the opposite way and it moved after that it rotated freely besides that i couldnt tell you
the intake manifold?....and did it start up right away after that?
hmm if after turning the other way then going forward, sounds like something could be stopping it turning inside?
Does it turn over if you are holding the clutch pedal to the floor? If yes then could be gearbox problem. If not, then presumably engine or maybe engine accessory problem - alternator, airpump, ac pump seize? |
ill take the belts off tomorrow and try to turn the bolt over
just remember without belts, water pump wont turn so if it runs, dont run for too long!
with belts off you should be able to turn all of those accessories by hand anyway as a test. did you say the engine turns over with clutch pedal to the floor, or not? just thinking if either way it was jammed, then there could be something inside the engine that could cause more damage if you keep trying to turn it over... |
engine does not turn over with clutch pedal all the way to the floor and the starter just clicks, and starter i believe is still good...
Hmm is there any chance anything has come loose and fallen down the intake into the engine?
i just unhooked all the belts and engine still won't turn over...at all..and nothing was messed with in the in manifold or anything of that sort..everything is stock and sealed...
so if you use a socket and a bar at least 2 feet long on the end can you turn the motor from the front pulley bolt? (best to only turn it clockwise)
sorry to be simple but just to clarify also, youve tried starting with gear in neutral, and clutch pedal depressed? just in case the clutch itself has failed to disengage, being in neutral should keep things free.. how old is the motor? maybe carbon lock, or maybe spun a bearing.. havent run low on oil recently? |
i tried with the gear in neutral and the clutch depressed....the engine has 136,000 miles on it...and i checked the oil after it stallled and the oil was just tad about half on the dipstick..
when i tried push starting it and dumping the clutch the rear tires would not rotate and would just skid.
hmm doesn't sound great. sounds like something internal in the engine.. possibly carbon locked.. if you can turn it by hand so apex seals line up with exhaust you can look in and see how things look i suppose..
do u know of any good trusted places to get a motor?
I'd trust pineapple racing, but I am in Australia.. just read good things about them and have bought a few bits from them. I like their instructional videos too.
