Engine storage. mmo, 2 stroke oil, or both?

What's best for storage? Mmo , 2 stroke oil , or both?

I have a turbo 87-88 shortblock that's sitting on a pallet, its been sitting for quite some time, at first it was in my trunk of my car for 3-4 months , now its outside under my deck on a pallet with a tarp over it, been there for a month maybe. Still turns fine.

I'll later be using it if the engine tests good on compression/coolant tests , or rebuilding it.

Hmm dont think I'll find that locally..I might just get it online.

Kinda broke atm, I bought some mmo the other day but it doesn't even look like oil so I'm hesitant to use it by itself.

ATF should also work, and you can DEF find that where ever you're at.

my input ...

if you're going to keep it outside, then get something in it NOW! for years, before i became aware of fogging oil and such specific products, i just put plain, ol' gear oil in my engines and internal parts for storage - the thicker, the better. you simply want to get a coating of lubricant in there, not just for the seals, but also to prevent corrosion.

the tarps are a double-edged sword. they can keep a lot out, but they also trap moisture inside them. after putting the gear oil in and turning it by hand through several rotations, i would suggest duct taping all entrances to the insides of the engine. hopefully you still have the manifold connected. if you don't, stuff paper towels in all 6 ports and duct tape them. duct tape the water pump entrances as well. i did that and kept engines for years at a time. everything was always pristine when i was ready for it.

if you still want the Amsoil fogging oil after that, then you can PM me when you're ready.

What about 5w-30 and mmo? That's the only oil I've got here atm unless I can find thicker

God..you don't have 10 bucks?
go to Napa man..!..ask them for Foggin' FOGGING oil..haha!
If they don't have it,tell them to Fog Off!

I did have a few bucks and got the mmo and some jack oil, the rest went to getting something for my gf so now I'm broke.

I'll see if I can find a way to get some $$ , I did take off my wheels I don't plan on using and was going to scrap at least two or 3, I have two 87 t2 wheels as well as two aluminum spares.

Was thinking of keeping the spares, I see they sell decent on here.

I found this for $5.59 , it looks like the same thing just made by a different company. I'll try to pick it up later

Another suggestion: IF you MUST store it outside fog the crap out of everything with oil if not any unoiled surface WILL corrode. When in a *DRY* environment bag the whole motor - a large lawn and leaf bag will work and SEAL the bag. But before sealing the bag add a couple pounds of the clumping type cat litter to the bottom of the bag to absorb any leftover moisture that might be trapped inside the bag when you seal it up.
Food for thought.

so basically what everyone is telling you, if you can get it out from under the deck and store it someplace dry, do that first..

wthdidusay82 02-11-13 01:22 PM

I can't store inside because its not my house and thats the only place I was allowed to put it. Sigh

Will one can be enough or should I use two can of fogging oil?

Should I still be putting a sealed bag over it with cat litter to absorb moisture or is that for only indoor storage?
