Engine rebuild help
 
Hi all. I am about to have my 1990 GTU engine go out for a stock rebuild, maybe street port if I have the enough funds for that. But, I need some recommendations on the rebuild process itself. Besides the engines internals, what are the recommended external parts and/or peripheral components should I replace while I have the engine out of the car and toredown. Or, what upgrades are popular during this process? Items such as water pump is a must, but, what else specifically? Upgraded aluminum radiator? Hoses? oil lines? Pulleys? Can somebody help me out with a rundown or list of items that should be replaced as a general rule of engine r&r. Thanks.

Check omp and the plastic oil lines. They usually get very brittle. Make sure engine has the thermal pellet. Racing pulley set, light flywheel and a better than stock clutch assembly are some upgrades that come to mind.

Ok. I have done this wrong before so I speak from experiance.

1. Bearings, rotors & stationary gear.
2. ALL the internal "o" rings. Don't forget the ones on the rotor.
3. ALL the metal seals & springs. Corner, Apex, and Side.
4. Be VERY sure that your compression "o" ring is on correct. the "joint" on the intake side.
5. Clean all the parts very well. like the side seal seats. Use the old seals to brake-loose carbon from the cracks of the rotor.
6. When you put the housings together make sure that the big "o" rings don't move out of place.
7. Don't oil the big "o" rings. they can stretch and it can also damage the orange one.
8. Take your time. Don't rush. If it seems to not want to go together. try again later.
9. After its together I usually put some oil in the intake port and rotate the engine around to lube everything, check for "free" movement and make sure the engine has compression.
10. Hope your first goes better then mine did.
