Engine Problems with my 2nd Gen. RX-7 Turbo

Hi,

I'm new to the RX-7 and I'm not really sure what I'm doing with the rotary engine. I have a question of what might be going on with my car. I bought the car, and the guy told me it had some problems. What is going on is when I start the car, is starts fine, and idles. When I apply any acceleration at all, the car will foul out, and shut off. I'm not sure what to do about it, because I haven't even gotten to drive the car yet, and it is driving me insane. If anybody would be able to help me out on this one, I'd appriciate it. Either leave me a message, or e-mail me please. Thanks alot.

Josh

Car is a 1988 RX-7 2nd Gen. Turbo. 5-speed man., it has 111,000 miles on the engine.

Welcome to the forum.
You will probably find more active members on the "2nd gen specific forum"
The FAQ threads at the top have many of you questions already answered.
I have a copy of the factory manuals at the link in my sig below.
You may download & print whatever you need.

About your problem:
I'd start with the TPS (throttle position sensor)
When it gets worn or dirty inside, it sends erratic signals to the ECU, which then goes nuts & starts giving random fuel cuts.
I use spray contact cleaner from the electrical department at Home Depot.
Spray it in between the AFM plunger & sleeve, work it in, blow it out.

Then go the the factory manual "fuel & emmissions" section & read the troubleshooting pages.
