Engine parts cleaning
 

So i searched and searched for tips on cleaning my rotors, housings, and irons the easy way... long story short i didn't find one.


What i wanted to do is drop them off at the machine shop and have them hot tank the stuff. But was afraid it would take the coatings off the housings and irons.

The rotors i am not worried about, since their OEM coatings are more than likely gone by rebuild time.... other than the cadmium...which is there to keep the carbon build up off right? and it doesn't work all the great as is.

so i came up with the idea that i needed SIMPLE GREEN to try this out, as it says it can clean aluminum. I think the best deal you may find on it would be at Lowes.

so i poured 5 gallons of water into a tote and poured a gallon of SG in there and let my housing sit for a few hours. and got this.

the carbon on the spark plug hole came off easily after letting it sit for an extended amount of time and using a nylon bristle. brush



anyways, i believe it takes the cadmium coating off the bolts that i left on top of the housing. no biggie.

can anyone comfirm what coating is on the irons, housings, rotors???

and what cleaners or chemical processes will strip that coating?

the rust and junk on the side of the housing hasn't loosened up some, but not enough. but its good at degreasing for sure.

simple green is great!

Simple Green is great stuff. it's effective. however, don't limit yourself. really heavy grease and carbon won't just fall away without some serious effort on your part. it would help to get some heavier degreasers involved as well.
