Engine not reving over 2000-3000 RPM
 

Hello,

I just picked up my new 85 gsl-se yesterday and went on a 2 hiours road trip. Everything went find until the end. Suddenly, the engine lacks power and will not rev over 2000 rpm, sometimes 3000rpm. It will not accept to move under its own power. The only way i could get back home was to shut the engine and restart it... then i could floor it for about 10 seconds, operating normaly and it would do the problem again....

Reminds me of a old airflow meter problem i once had on a efi porsche 944. It would work on the idle and partial thhrottle setting but not on the full throttle setting. Or could it be the computer? I have a s[pare one i could try..

Please help me with your insight. I wanted this car for 15 years, finnally get it and it dies on me. I was just telling my wife i was happy that for once, a used car i bought did not brake down the first day... 15 seconds later, it did

I was thinking about trying to clean and lubricate the AFM... any ideas or experince?

I recommend that when it acts up to check and see if there is fire to the leading plugs at that time.
There are different things that could be occuring here.
Loose connections at the fuseable links or deteriorated links (top 2).
Failing fuel pump(recommend perform fuel pressure/volume test when it does this or attach fuel pressure gauge to windshield to monitor while on test drive.
Extremley clogged catalytic converter.

I just went on a 20 minutes ride and nothing abnormal happened.

To check if there is fire, do I just pull the wire from the plug and look for spark?
I intend to buy a fuel pressure mesuring unit, I guess it is more clever than to buy a fuel pump for nothing and will be a good addition to my newby toolbox.

As far as catalytic converter, I doubt it because i have a racing beat header with a RB presilencer and a straight pipe muffler. I looked under the car and that is all I saw. Am I right by stating I have no CC?

I also noticed a small oil leak that seem to be coming from the bottom driver side of the oil cooler... any recommendation at how to approch that problem? I saw a post about oil cooler washers... or would this be the by-pass valve?

i had a problem similar, it could just be a bad ground somewhere, i ran around on all my wires, and there was a loose bolt that wasnt securing a ground down... dunno just a thought

So I now had the car for one week... what a great car!
I did not do the problem again until tonight...

I visually checked all the wires under the 2 storage bins... everything seems find, no oxydation.

I swaped the ecu for another one. The problem is still there...

I checked the engine running in total darkness... I see no fire jumping out...

The problem is still the same: at idle, you can here something is not right, not smooth enough. If I give gaz, it rev to about 2000rpm and then goes back to idle. then revs, then idle...

If i kill the engine and start it again, then i have power for about 5 seconds.

I am i need of ideas...
by the way, if anyone has the electrical diagram for this car, the fuel system and the injection system, i would be gratefull.

Oh yeah, i forgot,

Tired of working on the car, i give up and go have a drink of water... I came back to lock the garage, give it one last try, i don't know why, and the car goes A1... Do i need to mention i went for a fast ride...

This problem kills me. If it was always there, it would make more sense to me. now the car will probably act find for another week!

Problem Fixed? What was it? I have the same problem today, 2 Sep 2018.

What have you checked so far?

- make sure you have both ignition systems firing (but mainly the leading)
- injectors clogged
- fuel filter clogged
- oxygen sensor
- cat
- plugs

I have the same problem on my 13B sometimes it misses.... low power..... sometimes it doesn't...runs normal.... I am thinking a apex seal is going bye bye or sticking ...

Have you already tried the things suggested in this thread and the link I posted?
