engine flooding, any suggestions?
 
i have a 86 RX7 and i think the engine is flooding. i tried removing the 'EGI COMP', crank the engine 15sec, then plug the fuse back in and start. doesnt work. then tried the complex procedure, remove fuse, spark plug, crank, install spark plug, install fuse crank, started for like 2 sec and died. but for those 2 sec, there is HEAVY, i mean, REALLY HEAVY, smoke!!! i think it is still flooded. i did the complex way 2 times, i did put in a bit of trans oil in the bottom plug holes b4 reinstall the plugs. i had jumper cables hooked up to another running car so it should not be the battery. how many times is needed for the complex method??? any info is appreciated! thanks! oh, i the whole exhaust is not there. i dunno if that affects it. there is gas.

Take all the plugs out, turn the engine over for about 5 seconds. Wait about 15 seconds, turn it over for another 5 seconds. Repeat for a minute. Then wait for an hour or two. Return to repeat that procedure. Wait another hour. Squirt some automatic transmission fluid in the leading(lower) sparkplug holes. Pput plugs back in. Turn car over a few cranks. Put fuel pump relay back in. Start the car. It will smoke like hell and you might have to catch it, but that should do the trick.

catch what? why do i have to wait an hour? does the gas in the engine dry up? i changed the oil today and it smells like gasoline, but still didnt start. i will try ur method tommorrow, thanks!

ive done all of the above and found my own solution and it works perfect. in your trunk bay there is the power lines for the fuel pump.` located under neath the rug. find the black ground wire and cut it. extend the wires up towards your seat. connect an on/off switch(one that will stay off and stay on not spring back and forth). when your car is flooded turn the switch off. continue to start the car with the switch off. your car will eventuall start. when it does turn the pump back on WHALLA. fixes your start problem and keps your car from getting stolen.
now just hide the wires and install the switch somewhere and make it look clean.

you eng floods because of either clogged injectors i was told and creates excessive fuel pressure when the engine is turned off because the injectors turn off a split second before the pump thus creating excessive fuel pressure in the fuel lines. when you go to start again all the pressureize fuel rushes and floods the engine. ive found out that pulling the EGI fusedoesn't really help because is turns off the injectors but that does not relieve pressure in the fuel line. it does still burn the gas that is already in the engine but doesn't relieve the pressure. in any event removing the egi fuse doesent work well.
turning off the fuel pump still allows the injectors to work relieving the fuel pressure till there is no more fuel in the line. eventually (within 15 to 20 seconds) while turning the engine over the air fuel ratio increases allow the engine to start. and as soon as it does flip the switch on. problem solved

The car sometimes will try to die on you and you have to give it a little gas. The extra long waiting is so the gas will be completely dried out of the engine. You don't necsesarily(sp?) have to wait that long, but it is sure fire to get it running.

thebigone, can u post or send me a picture of the wire u cut in the trunk for the fuel pump? so ur saying turn the pump off, crank, then it will eventually start because of the amount of fuel already flooding the engine? then turn the pump back on to continue fuel going to the engine? that sounds right. has anyone else tried it? if its possible post a pix of the wire u cut or email the pix to me at prodrive@earthlink.net! thanks a bunch!

i just heard there is another way to turn off ur fuel pump without cutting wires. there is a green connector under the steering colum near ur right foot. once u disconnect it, the fuel pump will not work.
