there's really nothing to "fix" internally. don't have to worry about things like timing belts or chains or valve adjustments or that sort of thing. keep fresh oil and coolant in it and treat it like a gremlin (no heavy throttle 'til warmed up, never shut off 'til warmed up, never overheat, and never ever run a turbo engine lean under boost) and they last practically forever.
externally, they're just like any other engine... you have your electronic engine controls or your electronic emissions controls tacked on to a carburetor (depending on year/model), nothing out of the ordinary really.
