engine codes!!

Is there any way to check the engine codes on a fd w/o having to take it to mazda. I live in west TX and there is really no place i would trust someone to look at my car! I'll be driving down the street and all of a sudden the check engine light comes on and off like something is loose. I replaced my O2 sensor about a month ago, but that hasnt helped much. Another ? Where can i pick up a copression tester for a rotary engine? Or are all the compression testers the same? Back tho the engine codes, I remember I could check my s-10 by turning on the ingition and performing some kind of on off on off pattern, thus that would give me a code i could look up. Can I do that on my FD?
I have all the bpu's except for the intake and ecu if that helps. Thanks

on the drivers side, there' a diagnostic box...... use a length of wire and connect pin 10 to GND.... turn the key to "on" and the check engine light will flash..... long flashes for the 1st number, a pause, and then quick flashes for the 2nd

compression tester

You can go through Mazda for a compression tester they run about $1200,silly huh?I use a normal tester with the pressure relief valve taken out, not as accurate but does the job. If I were you I would pick up a 3rd gen specific book,it will give you code # checks such as (05 = knock sensor)3rd gens have lotsa codes!!!

if you look under the cap, there (should) be a diagram of which pin is which..... I'll try to find a picture of it.... but my searching skills suck, so it might be a bit....

Look on the inside of your diagnostic box cover, you should have a sticker that will have GND and TEN locate these on your block and jump them with a piece of wire.you should be able to turn key on and grab codes.

Also, there is another pin, GND (ground of course) a jumper wire needs to be connected between those two pins... (sorry if I wasn't more clear the first time)

you run a jumper wire from the GND pin to the 10 pin in that little box (so the wire will only be placed in that diagnostics box....

ok, sorry about that......

Now, I couldn't edit your pic to show, but try to bear with me.... ;-)

on the VERY TOP ROW, 3rd pin from the left, connect that to the 1st pin on the left on the 2nd row....

The 3rd from the top is 10. the 1st on the 2nd row is GND - run a jumper wire to those two, with the key off.... then turn the key to the on position, your check engine light will pause for a moment, and then flash any existing codes.

Sorry if I was confusing before! :bigthumb: Im a idiot.. lol, let me know how it goes!

hey cool it worked! I got the big blue bible out and read the codes....my oil metering pump ,which i use marvell mystery oil for that reason, and my air pump relay, which I dont have an air pump, i eliminated it! Thank you guys for the info!!!! You all have been very helpful. And to think,my wife says I dont learn anything surfing and posting on the forums!
