Emissions levels
 

Can any one please tell me how i can lower my carbon monoxide levels from 138 to be 30 in my s4 non-turbo, it hasn't pasted emissions sense 2003, and I've already done the mass airflow sensor, o2 sensor, catylatic converter, and in phoenix I am yet to find a garage who will touch a rotary engine besides the the dealer. Anyway, having just struggled through CO emissions, here is what I did.
Prior to testing I ran Seafoam through the gas- two full tanks, one can per tankful.
Run it moderately hard as much as possible.
The day of testing I had the fuel level very low (just above empty) and about a block from the test station I pulled over and poured a gallon of denatured alcohol into the tank.
This did the trick*.

*It also helps if your tester can actually drive a manual trans car properly.
I don't know how your tests work but here in Denver the tester tries to follow a preprogrammed cursor on a screen, varying the gear/RPM accordingly.
My first test (which failed), the guy was all over the place, constantly overshooting the speed and just laying off the throttle abruptly- no doubt dumping lots of unburnt fuel on the overrun.
The girl who ran the second test was a real pro, shifted very smoothly and held the roller speed right on the button.
She even liked the short throw shifter...

Seafoam is basically a fuel system cleaner, I got mine at Pep Boys and I've seen it at Checkers.

The most popular method of using it seems to be introducing it directly into the throttle body through a vacuum line (with the car running, naturally).
If you search the forum there are several threads about it and it's benefits are controversial. I just added it to the gas, which is the method detailed on the can.
Can't say I noticed much difference but I was desperate and figured it couldn't hurt.

I also replaced the O2 sensor with a Bosch generic as well.

I really didn't want to replace the cat (my car came with a insanely crappy, all welded single exhaust, including a cheezy no-name cat), as I planned (and have since acquired) a RB system and the above tricks got me through the test.

Do I put the seafoam in and do the emissions while its still in the tank, or do I need to let it burn all the way through and put fresh gas in and do emissions?[B]

Seafoam is just a fuel system "cleaner" and won't help during the test at all.
Search the forum and you'll find examples (including a youtube vid, I think) of how people run it through the intake system- which may do more dramatic cleaning than just adding to the gas as I did.

Personally, I think the denatured alcohol and new O2 sensor had more to do with my eventual success than the Seafoam.
