Check your coolant hoses. If you're worried about breaking down. Then go to hertz and rent a car. |

Check it over like you would any car before a long road trip. A naturally-aspirated rotary is plenty reliable, and doesn't have a lot of model-specific issues.
|
check belts, hoses, coolant,Tires, air pressure in tires. If it has been a daily driver and hasn't given you any trouble,I wouldn't be worried about it.
If you are really worried get AAA. |
So far I have done the following:::
-air filter change -spark plug change leading and trailing -all belt change -tightened the coolant hoses as they were a little loose -oil change -used 108 octane on a full tank -checked tire pressure -even cleaned throttle body :[) was a little cruddy in there causing it to sound sluggish so any other ideas? |
freeway driving is about the easiest thing you can do. skip the 108 octane, you dont need it.
do check the wheel bearings, but other than that you should be fine |
have a good spare tire and and a charged cell phone. Watch your gas level and always refill before you really need to, not many stations out in the middle of the desert. Ive done that trip 3 times, carry maps and a gps.

Check all your coolant hoses for how old they are, specifically the one under the oil filter pedestal that runs to the heater core. Oil drops on that hose often during oil changes, and if its too old and soft it could give out during your trip.
Might want to bring spares of some things that could go out, some extra coolant and oil maybe, and a compression test wouldnt hurt just to be safe, and i would probably pressure test your cooling system (This could be more harm than good possibly with your engine age, ill let someone else chime in.) Maybe a fuel cut off switch to completely avoid the chance of flooding (Especially if the compression test comes out lower than expected) |
