Distributor install on 85 RX7
 

I'm new to the rotary world. I got a new rebuilt 13b engine and I want to install the distributor in properly! How do I do so? Can anyone help?

1. spin the engine to TDC
2. align the dot/dimple/divot on the distributor gear with the tab on the shaft
3. install the distributor with the adjustment section centered (or as close to center as you can) over the locking bolt-hole. [i usually put a stud in the hole so you can lock it with a nut - like the Gen II engines]
4. connect the wiring


you should probably get yourself a shop manual. the factory ones are available for free download, so there's no excuse not to have one.

I guess my real question is, how do I know where is TDC? I have done it on piston engines. I have a 1st gen but I'm going to install a 13b engine.

well, there are a few ways to do it. i suppose the simplest way would be looking at the pulley. you will see two marks - provided the color hasn't been rubbed off it, there should be a red one and a yellow one. i think you want to line up the red one (i never remember and usually have to refer to my manual).

as i said, there are other ways to locate TDC, but the pulley - while not necessarily the MOST accurate - is by far the simplest.

Thank you, I can check it that way. Also if I check by pulling a plug, which I would think maybe the forward top plug and turn the engine till I feel air being pushed out of that plug hole and see if those markings line up. Right?
