Diffrences between a 1989 Non-Turbo Transmission and a 1989 Turbo Transmission.

I was wondering if there was a difference between a 89 non-turbo transmission and a 1989 turbo transmission. On the non-turbo cars, I think that one of the models (GTUs) came with the turbo transmissions so that one is being excluded from this conversation unless being compared to the non-turbo cars. Any noticeable differences as far as distinguishing marks on the out side? I know the Turbo transmissions are stronger but, what makes them stronger, things like that. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The GTUs did not come with the TII tranny.

The TII tranny is bigger. There is a removable plate on the bottom side of it where you can see the clutch.

Search the 2nd gen section for more information.

Ah, and on the NA tranny the inspection plate is on the top, the early gear ratios are different, and overall length of the transmission is different, meaning you'd need a custom driveshaft to use with an NA rear diff, or change to a turbo diff and use the turbo driveshaft. Input shaft bearings are stouter on the turbo, apparently.

And sadly, the NA transmission is apparently the same as the one used for the same year Mazda pickups. :P

I've gotta say, your site is awesome and informative - I only wish the pictures were a little bigger, or could be clicked on to be made bigger. Most of the pictures I could tell what you were talking about, but the biggest difference I could tell between the turbo and na flywheels was that the turbo one had more rust on it. :D You're still an awesome asset to the rotary community.
