Cranking but a no Go :-(

i have a 1986 rx7 with 64K original miles, and the car cranks but it does not turn on...My personal mechanic told me theres no electricity going to the motor, any ideas?

What i think it might be is the spark plugs or ignition Coils...

Get a spark plug tester and see.... You can also pull the plug wire off a bit at the coil so it barely makes a connection and hear it arcing... otherwise make sure its getting air and fuel. Also make sure its not flooding out.... if it is.... I unplug the fuel pump at the socket on the drivers side rear shock tower.... pull a spark plug and see if it's fouled.... you'll be able to tell by look and by smell.

I am not getting any spark at all..

Pull the two wire White plug off of the leading coil and w/key to on test for voltage on the Black/Yellow wire as it should have 12 volts. If it does not then check the 40 amp EGI INJ fuse in the engine fuse box. If this fuse was good the Black/Green wire that receives voltage from this fuse would have constant voltage on it and this wire runs to the four wire plug in the Main relay so check this wire if need be for constant voltage to prove that this wire has 12 volts on it if the B/Y wire at the leading coil does not.

I'll bet a donut it is flooded.

Thanks for the help, car finally runs the mechanic replaced the ecu and new fuel pump, car idled good but after 10 mins i left the shop the car was'nt reving passd 4 k and turning off on me... Half an hr pass and i put gas in it and drove it home going 30 mph... After the car sits for a while i turn it back on and idles perfect and revs perfect, but when i drive it for a mile or 2 it starts jerking and when pedal is too the floor it does not rev up and rpm dies and about 5 mins.. This is a very annoying problem..Please help..Btw i paid 440 dollares at the shop and do not want to give them another dollar

MrAceBabii 10-10-11 07:52 PM

I am thinking this can be a sensor problem.

MrAceBabii 10-14-11 06:48 PM

When i first got it it only crankd, put a 87 NA ecu and new fuel pump and started right up and drove untill it starts stuttering
and turns off. It only turns off & stutters while driving but idles and rev's perfectly. car been sitting for a while.

When i drive it, the car wants to go but something stops it from moving, At wide open throttle it does not go no where and it struggles too go over 4k..

The primary injectors only work when you rev the car while idling. Secondary injectors work when the engine is under load such as driving. Since your problem occurs when driving you should focus on the secondary injectors as the possible problem. Disconnect the plug to the TPS. Also disconnect the vacuum hose to the Pressure sensor and cap it. This will trick the car into thinking the engine is under load so you could free rev the engine while idling and see how the secondary injectors respond as you sit in the driveway. Take another video of this so it can plainly be seen what new if anything is going on.

Your car also might be suffering the 3800 rpm hesitation syndrome which is exceedingly common on 86's and the car will fall on its face at 3800rpm. The problem is solved by regrounding some of the ECU ground wires such as pins 3A, 3G, 2R and 2C. The manufacturer suggested regrounding the Pressure sensor ground wire as the easiest method for correcting this problem. I've never heard of this problem causing the car to outright shut off but I guess anything is possible.

There is a Black cable bolted to the alternator. This is the voltage output wire and you can use this wire where it connects to the alternator to measure the voltage produced. Chances are the gauge is inaccurate for some reason.

i'm beginning to hate the '86, i have one that keeps coming back with similar issues as this one but everything tests ok...

push it off a cliff and save yourself!

one of the only cars that has stumped me in 10 years of rotaries.

reground the pressure sensor
adjust the TPS and check the range while slowly sweeping the throttle
check fuel pressure @ 32psi idling, 40 psi with regulator open
new fuel filter
injectors cleaned and serviced(this i am questioning because it still seems to be an injector issue but i did drop them off, pick them up and pay for them..)
check for codes
replace AFM
check and adust timing
replaced precat and main cat
replace blah blah blah, you name it i swapped it but feel free to pick anything from the list and check it.

^ I agree that its a fuel issue.

I would do the easy things first like a fuel filter. As far as it hitting a wall at 4,000, that could be your aux ports? I bought an 88 with ports stuck closed and it would not accelerate hard over 4k, only accelerate lightly.

My rear injector is flooded and rusty..my problem..?

send them out to witchhunter or rc engineering to be tested and cleaned.

don't trust your local mom and pop diesel shop, even if it is the only one in town... i know the issue i'm digging for is injector related but i don't want to admit it to myself as i'm too busy to rip this pos apart again.

i should have taken the hint that they kept asking me to drop off more injectors to find a single good set, they kept saying all my old 460's were faulty and not working at all. out of about 14 i only got a good set of 4 that could be serviced? right.

MrAceBabii 10-16-11 02:39 PM

with the injector still on the car i rotated it a little, and also push'd in the clip and started dripping gas.

rx7 mechanic replaced the fuel pump( guess he would've told me the filter is bad too)

injectors i have them out i will replace them or service them

also where is the pressure sensor located?

The sensor is bolted to the passenger strut tower.
