compression problem

I have a freshly rebuilt s2 turbo motor. IT started it's new life with 100 psi on all six faces. My front rotor has declined to 100-50-50. I pulled the exhaust manifold and everything looks good. I didn't find any parts floating around, what I can see of the apex seals they look good the springs feel fine as well. If I continue to run it like this do I have any chance of it not ending badly.

that was TII not S2

That is usually a corner seal went, or the apex seal cracked, tear her back apart

I suspect it is an apex seal. Do I replace all of them or just the damaged one ?
I wouldn't need much encouragement to ignore it and hope it goes away.

 this is actually an amusing statement and I suppose most of us may have a similar reaction to bad news like this on some level. however, at some point reality has to soak in and the reality is a fractured apex seal today is shrapnel tomorrow. there's no getting around that.

It's ready to come out I just need to pick up the engine hoist tomorrow. A $2.00 injector connector sure can screw up your day. I thought I was out of the woods when it survived my self taught tuning school. I think I will try some of those unbreakable apex seals.

Unbreakable? Ha

smitty 08-10-14 07:49 PM

ok tiny corner missing off apex seal and a nice crack the rest of the way across. The chip passed with no other damage. What is the wisdom here replace one seal or all of them.
I really deserve this one. The car was running like shit and I just kept pushing it.

for me, since you said it's a recent rebuild. replace the broken one and carry on. however, you may want to take a much closer look at the other 2 from that rotor before assembly.

lduley 08-10-14 09:14 PM

how old are the seals? if they are fairly new I would just replace the one, if you got some miles on them, break out the special tools and start measuring.

Or if you got the cash, replace all 6......I wouldn't have the cash so I would be measureing

smitty 08-10-14 09:54 PM

I ordered new ones. They are all in spec with very low mileage. Could I use them in my next build without worrying about them. How can one break and the rest not be ready to go?
Dave

one can break and the small fractured pieces can hit the next seal, cracking or chipping it as well.
