Cold Air Intake Question.

I put this here because it really applies to every gen or car for that matter...
I know the power increase is debatable and that’s not what I am here to ask. From my experience one of the main purposes besides providing cooler air to the intake, is to provide it more air without restriction correct?? If that is the case why do I keep seeing people with the stock ribbed intake tube?

For Example:

If air is like water and takes the path of least resistance, wouldn't it make more sense to have aluminum or other metal tube carrying the air or at least something smooth with out the ribs?

The ribbed intake hoses were designed that way to cut back on the air noise.
As far as smooth tubing goes, yes it is more efficent for allowing air to flow freely.
