clutch and flywheel

hey guys so my question is it there a difference between between a

S4 N/A pressure plate, clutch disc from a S4 Turbo pressure plate, clutch disc?

S4 N/A flywheel from a S4 Turbo flywheel? <--- planning to get a lightened flywheel

thanks for your help

farberio 05-16-10 02:55 PM

Yes. The n/a flywheel is stepped, the TII is not. The clutch MUST match the flywheel, in addition to the trans, and clutch slave cylinder.

FD7KiD 05-16-10 04:22 PM

ok cool i have another question brah how about the S4 N/A and S5 N/A clutch and pressure plate is there a difference between those two for my S4 N/A

bumpstart 05-16-10 10:36 PM

FC NA == 225 mm ,, 22 spline stepped face clutch, requires the matching pressure plate
FC turbo === 240mm flat pressure plate ( no step ) , 23 spline

note there is a minor diameter change between s4 turbo and s5 turbo,, though all parts interchange OK
( s5 is closer to 235mm )

NA uses a different clutch slave to the t2 ,, the mounting lug position and rod length change

YOU CANNOT MIX AND MATCH the clutch disk/ pressure plate/ flywheel components between NA and turbo

however

-- you can alter the throw rod and successfully interchange slaves
- auto counterweights between NA and turbo are the SAME
auto counterweights between s4 and s5 are DIFFERENT

ok cool i have another question brah how about the S4 N/A and S5 N/A clutch and pressure plate is there a difference between those two for my S4 N/A
the clutch pressure plate and disk are the same
the dynamic weights of the two flywheels are not,, you cannnot put ANY s5 flywheel onto any s4 and vichy versa

FD7KiD 05-19-10 11:27 PM

so i can put an S5 N/A clutch with on my S4 N/A as long as i have an the the S4 N/A wheel and my S4 counter weight right????

S5 N/A Clutch + S4 N/A flywheel + S4 N/A Counter Weight + S4 N/A Engine = all system go????

farberio 05-20-10 08:02 AM

All systems go, prepare for takeoff.

tightness thanks guys this was a lot of help

hey guys i have another question about flywheels. do you think i can rock this Exedy or Findanza Lightweight Flywheel on my S4 N/A? i know that im suppose to only put on an S4 N/A flywheel but what if on the application they say 1986-1991 N/A can i still use this

That's the only one that will fit an N/A.

When you buy an aftermarket flywheel, it comes as a balanced unit and you need to install a counterweight on it. The counterweight is from an automatic RX7. You install a S4 or S5 counterweight depending on your car. For you, you would have to install a S4 counterweight. There is no difference between a turbo or n/a counterweight.

thank you so much heres another tech question

the reason why im asking all these question is because im going to convert my FC N/A Auto into a FC N/A Manual

i looked up a few write ups with the search but have not found a useful and clear one yet very vague other than this one http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/2n...to_5speed.html
and on one of the steps (after 23) it says that i have to convert my auto crossmember into a manual crossmember using two plates cant i just use a manuel oem crossmember (which i have) instead of going the other route?? the holes still line up dont they??

and also is the Clutch Master & Slave Cylinders have the same Lines? cause I'm looking on ebay for some of the parts and as for the clutch lines im thinking of getting this one maybe two of them if it works on both the Master & Slave..
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/86-92...ht_2128wt_1167

thanks agian

Excellent, just bolt the counterweight from your motor right onto the lightweight flywheel you are going to get and you are all set!

Unfortunately not. The holes in the body of the car for the automatic transmission are different then the manual trans. You will need to fab up a mount adapter.

The master connects to the slave using only one of those lines. From the clutch master it goes into a hardline and then into a rubber line to connect to the slave.

Personally I would try to mimic the stock setup by finding a donor car for the hardline and the mounting location to the firewall. I would also buy my clutch line from a more credible source then ebay. Corksport sells cheap stainless lines in addition to mazdatrix.

so im going to have to find a really good welder for this set up then... is it hard to figure this part out cause i never done anything like this before.

so dose that mean i need to source out a hardline also for what im doing or is the Auto one good enough???

so only get 1 line from one of these stores and connect it from the Master to the Slave cylinder

Hmm, I have not done this swap either. But that doesn't look that bad to do. Go for it on your own as it looks like a good learning experience. It looks like you should be able to make the adapter and have it welded later.

You will need to source a hardline, the automatic doesn't have a clutch so the non-existant hardline is not going to cut it.

Slave -> clutch line -> hardline -> master

FD7KiD 05-27-10 07:19 PM

thanks for all the help i called Mazdatrixs and they have most of what i need for low prices
but i have another question

electrical wise what do i need to do on the wire harness (AUTO) to make it work with the MANUAL parts for this conversion i forget where i got this info from but i think i need to do something for the reverse or something like that??? but what exactly i tried searching for it but thats getting me nowhere.
