cat converter..need help

Can anyone tell me where I can find a thread or what I do with the tube that comes out of the cat and back to the carb? It is a 82 fb and the cat is shot and don't know where to find a good one. So I thought I would just pull the cat.

You really needed to post this thread in the 1stgen tech board, but since I'm here...

You need to know the OD of the exhaust pipe under your car at the catalytic converter. Once you know that, try Jeg's, Summit or even troll eBay to fins a replacement...caveat ---> If you eBay, make absolutely sure the seller has great feedback ON THAT KIND OF ITEM, and also do a little Googling on the manufacturer name to see what you can find.

Getting an exhaust garage to install it right is the next problem because they like to burn up the factory thin-wall tube coming from the Air Control Valve to the catalytic converter..

rx7.com (rotary performance) sells bonez converter systems. I bought one a couple years ago and it passed two emmission tests so far so its been on the car for about 4 years. although i think its breaking up internally recently. i didnt have a working acv for about 2 years since i installed the bonez cat so that probably increased the wear on it. i've heard that bonez products should last a long time tho for rotary cars

How do you know if your acv valve is bad. Can I check it before installing new cat?

boyee 01-16-09 02:21 PM

there is a test procedure to check if the acv is good or bad in the fsm.
you can download or view the fsm online.
but another simple way is to disconnect the tube running from the acv up to the air filter assy and rev the engine to 2500 rpm or higher and you shouldnt feel air coming out of it. if more air comes out of it the higher the engine speed the acv is definitely bad. when you go buy a new one there are different models the California or Federal. Looks like if you buy a new one you'll take the Federal. Still.. they're a pretty penny brand new

http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/file...ssions_12A.pdf
page 23 of this link shows test procedure for acv. its a 1985 fsm so some parts might not be on your car. but it shows which hose to disconnect and check.

instead of buyin a mazda cat system which are ludicrously expensive.. this is what i bought and it works well and has a split air pipe: http://rx7.com/store/rx7/saexhaust.html for $225. its the entire system and a direct replacement. also dont forget to buy the bolt and gasket set.

here is the acv part number you need. http://mazdatrix.com/b-egr.htm
it is the second one listed in the acv section. i would recommend going to mazda-parts.com and looking up the part by part no. because they sell at wholesale prices that saved me some $$$ buying my acv through their parts store. remember, mazdatrix part numbers are like mazda part numbers but i think you just need to copy the last third and place it in the very front

Since my car won't idle after warmup " choke" I checked my ACV during warm-up. Dont know if that makes a difference. Air was blowing out the hose to the air cleaner so hard you couldn't hardly keep your head over it. That's when I noticed my cable was not hooked up to the "teeter totter". I turned car off and hooked it up. When I checked again there was NO air coming out the hose. Therefore, I presume my blower is working and my ACV is working. But, because my ACV WAS not working it probably ruined my CAT. If my CAT is clogged can you unclog it or just buy a new one.. flame away on that one. And Boyee did you get the second one on that list...thanks

Where in Kansas are you? I'm an hour north of Kansas City in St Joseph. PM me if you need help or parts.

Finally replaced my cat with a Bonez from RP. It fit perfectly and works great so far.
Car now sounds great and idles great. However, MY 7 now idles in first gear 750 and travels 2 mph on a flat road with no clutdh. in second gear at 750 goes 6 mph no clutch. Third gear it eventually dies at about 1000rpms. It also stumbles and hesitates just a little between 1200-2300 rpms. Do I have something set up wrong or do I have a clutch issue? My car did not operate this way before I began this endeavor.

boyee 03-18-09 06:19 PM

why are you letting it idle in gear? so your car is moving at idle speed through third gear? i never tried that but i think that could be too much load on the engine at idle on third gear so that is why it is dying on ya

my1st7 04-07-09 10:00 PM

I adjusted the mixture screw and idle screw as described in thread by sterling
performs much better--- still just slight hesitation between 1000-2000 rpms.
When my car was running perfectly... I dont think even in 1st gear it would keep running at idle without clutch. I tried this to see how well it would run at low rpms under a load. I was shocked it didnt die. Should I keep adjusting screws to get rid of last little bit of hesitation or maybe check the timing?
